They don't want to give up Montero, Hughes or Joba, and that is why they're not getting him. If he got released they'd pick up the contract faster than you could ignore all baseball statistics.

You forget to mention the luxury tax involved. Yanks are over the threshold and now have to pay forty cents extra on each additional dollar spent on salary. To keep Halladay through 2010 would cost over $30 million in salary and luxury tax.

You could have summed this up in one paragraph instead of dragging it out for a whole column.

If a player is released, the team releasing the player is obligated to pay whatever the remaining salary as those monies are guaranteed...

MLB, as part of attempting to modernize their facilities back in 2002, gave incentives to teams if they build new facilites, they will not be subject to a luxury tax...

"disgracefully unbalanced world"......how about you giving up your job, to one of the unemployed ? no healthcare ?? how about kicking out the illegals ?? that will decrease the cost for the taxpayers ! matthews, you are the typical liberal working in the media; playing head games with the public. next time stick to the topic.

Is this guy actually reporting any news here? You know the Yanks will look at the situation and if they feel the price is right ie. prospects, then they will pull the trigger. Though I find it highly unlikely that Toronto would trade this guy inside the division. So the only way the Yanks get him is if they overpay and why would they do that. He is 31 which is generally when a pitcher starts showing all the wear and tear and this guy has never been a picture of perfect health. I believe he has been on the DL at least 3 times in the last 4 years. So Wallace stop trying to say this is about money, Cashman is a general manager who understands what he is working with and believe me if he could get Hallady for 3 double A prospects then the deal would have been done along time ago.

I say pick Doc up anyway. The money that will come off next years salary plan will more than make up for his 15 mil. This year, suck it up and bite the bullet for the 7 mil. We need pitching help, not some has been taking over in the 5 hole the rest of the year.

This is another silly article from a Newsday writer. No, the Yanks aren't acquiring Doc because they can't find $7 million in the cushions of the clubhouse couches. Riccardi is asking for the sun, the moon, and the stars and the Yanks do not want to part with their entire farm team. Matthews, please try harder.

Yeah the same thing was being said just before the Yankees signed Texeira. Don't kid yourself, the Yankees could afford a 300 million dollar payroll without even breathing hard!

Why the Yanks !!! signed cc sabathia... i always believed he stinks.. and only had some good solid pitching in his carrer... Halladay is the type of pitcher yankss will always need... not sabathia... bad decision.

really, sum this up in 1 sentence. he just repeated himself over and over with different words. cant afford him? answer me this...can they afford NOT to make a run @ him. people keep talkin about the payroll. ok, so with a payroll of $206million can they afford not to add the final piece of the puzzle that may take them to the promise land. 7 mil for this yr..they can do that, and hell $16 mil for next is a bargain for a pitcher of Halliday talent. look @ what they paid to CC and AJ. if this team is gonna wait until Joba and Hughes become seasoned starters the rest of the team will be past it's prime, if not retired.

Your columns are so disorganized. What does Roy Halladay have to do with Citibank or Goldman. Its no wonder nobody buys newsday, your articles are stupid nonsense. Try talking about sports. Newsday is the biggest loser of them all so until you have any clue about Wall street, try to stick to sports.
