Pelfrey's three balks help doom Mets in 2-0 loss

Full story: Newsday

When Mike Pelfrey stumbled off the mound in the Citi Field opener, it was a source of amusement for his teammates, the baseball equivalent of a clip from "America's Funniest Home Videos." But Pelfrey's problems with the mound last night at AT&T Park were nothing to laugh about as his three balks helped doom the Mets in a 2-0 loss to the Giants.

What was Manuel thinking pitch-hitting Pagan in the 8th inning with the bases loaded with 1-out?

Nothing wrong with dropping a game every once in awhile. They're not going to go undefeated for the balance of the season. Pelf has been pitching real well and I think he'll continue to do so. For a bad night, it wasn't awful. No shame in giving up a pair of runs over 6 innings. It didn't really matter if he gave up 1 run or a hundred because his offense got none and ya can't win with none!

Although I'm happy the Mets won 3 of 4, this was a frustrating loss. You have Matt Cain walking the ballpark & here's your chance to really put the hammer down & you let him off. Pitchers like Cain who struggle & then find themselves that's not a good sign. 2 double plays, Pelf's 3 balks (must have suffered from Mackey Sasser syndrome) & Angel Pagan hitting for daniel Murphy (what was manuel thinking)? Could've easily been a 4 game sweep. Pelf except for the balks pitched decently but cain & the pen did better. Now Tim Redding takes the ball in his mets debut, then maine & Livan. Hopefully win 2 of 3 before heading to Fenway for 3 over the holiday weekend. Lets Go METS!!!

In a way every loss is frustrating and you will always to fine points of the game that should have gone the other way and the play should have been executed differently, thats why its a loss.....

Can somebody explain something to me please? While Pelfrey definitely needs to work on his mechanics to ensure this doesn't happen again, how can you possibly blame pelfrey for tonight's loss? The Mets scored ZERO RUNS. Pelfrey only gave up 2 RUNS. How many games do you (the media) expect the pitching to win if they score ZERO RUNS????

The title and focus of this article is pathetic and glosses over the real issue. Pelfrey's 3 balks were a small component and more of a warning of the future. The reason the mets lost this game is because they COULD NOT SCORE A RUN.

The offense has been very good the last few weeks - last night not so much - its going to happen every once in a while.

Frustrating loss the Mets did more to lose the game than the Giants did to win it. The head first slide continues to be a Mets a staple now it cost them Alex Cora. Three balks astounding that a major league pitcher is not concentrating. It set up innings for the Giants and led to both of their runs. Matt Cain with a two strike count gets a hit. These things need to be corrected. The Mets also need to improve defensively. The winning streak looks good but the underlying deficiencies continue to plague this team especially the poor defense incessant mental mistakes.

Jim How's things? Yes but the Mets had their chances against Matt Cain. He was walking the ballpark. They had a chance to throw down the gauntlet but it wasn't in the cards. Still I'll take 3 of 4. Johan finally got run support even though he was a little off himself. The errors didn't help but hey it evens out over time. Look at the games he pitched marvelously & got nothing to show for it? Meanwhile how bout your team? 3 straight walkoff wins & several whipped cream pies in the face. AJ better watch his back on Friday. If he throws a 9 inning gem he might get the triple whammy. 3 pies in the face. That's called getting even. Anyway hope the Mets can continue their winning ways agsinst Torre's Dodgers sans Manny. They still have a nice team even without him. Mets will have their work cut out for them. Ditto this weekend at Fenway. You're going for the sweep with andy on the hill. Can it be 4 walkoffs in a row? We'll see. Enjoy the games.

What a disgrace of a team.
They play like a Little league team.
Church and Murphy can't play defense.
Wright is asleep half the time.
Reyes is lazy and doesn't run out hits.
Sheffield is on steroids.
Pelfrey forgets how to pitch.
Maine is a head case.
Olie perez is a loser.
This looks like another year with no World Series win.
This will make 40 seasons of NY MU TS baseball with only one WS win. And that win was 23 years ago!!!

You are absolutely right....if there are no runs it doesn't matter if he gives up 1 or 100. It was a good series and they only lost 1 and are still in first.

Good pitching stops good hitting is a statement frequently used. The Mets were given bases loaded twice and failed to get a fly ball that would have taken that zero off the scoreboard. Is that good pitching? or poor hitting?
Manuel continues to make moves that baffle every Met fan, Pagan for Murphy?? what is this fool doing?
All in all a good series, 3 of 4,now to LA which will be a real test of both offense and defense.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Virgo

If something is weighing on your mind it will start to affect your health, Virgo. It might make you feel tired or depressed, or it could dominate your thoughts. You know what you should do about it, of course, but it seems like too much effort or you want to pretend that it doesn't exist. Unfortunately, this escapist attitude won't make the problem go away and might even make it more tricky by the time you finally decide to tackle it.
