(C, news, msgs) employees will be losing their jobs.

The banking giant is eliminating approximately 50,000 jobs, bringing its total employee count to 300,000, Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit said this morning.

Pandit also said the company will cut expenses by 20% to about $50 billion next year.

Citi shares slipped 61 cents, or 6.4%, to $8.91 on the news.
