The Phils should not re-sign Burrell.
We have been waiting for this for awhile.
The guy cannot run anymore, his arm is not the best and his swing has holes.
Thanks for the memories Pat. But, it is time to sign with an AL team and become a DH.
The previous regime of Lieberthal, Abreu and now Burrell will finally all be purged.

Burrell has been inconsistent throughout his career and they really should'nt go out of their way to resign him. That being said, he's a decent player and has some good years ahead of him with or without the Phillies. The team will be fine either way.

I liked Abreu and those that dawg him are Eskin puppets. While not a great fielder he consistently puts up very good numbers. He had a good career with the phillies. The whole hateful propaganda espused by Eskin and Cataldi has been proven to be wrong. That last half season he was here I think it really got to him and this is why he was down to the .260's prior to being traded. Once on the Yankees he got his groove back. The Yankee fans appreciated Abreu and he did well for them. Chances are they will move in a different direction and let him sign with another team. I would'nt mind if it was the Phils, but I know that will not happen.

Lieberthal was inhury riddled and inconsistent. I too criticized him but I think they should have accepted his proposal of sticking around as a 2nd stringer and letting Ruiz start. He even said he would take a pay cut. This sure would have saved fans the agony of having to endure Rod Barajas in 07.

If Burrell will take a "reasonable" pay cut, I see no problem keeping him. If he still wants big $$, then let him enter the free agency market and say good-bye.

Eaton is still under contract for one more year at 8.5 Million, so you cant say that his salary is available. Know your facts.

They should sign him if they can get him at 2year/14mill, but he is going to get 12-13 million for a single year.

Thanks for everything Burrell.

Believe me dude, I am no Eskin puppett. That guy is the most negative broadcaster ever.
Abreu to me was a good player, but not a winning ballplayer. The guy would smile after striking out, would not go get a fly ball up against the wall and you would never see him bowl over the catcher to score a run.
Lieberthal was done at least three years prior to him leaving Philly. How long did he last in LA? Not a full year?
Burrell is the same - done at least as a regular everyday left fielder. He should move on.

I totally agree. If you can sign him to a one year deal that won't break the bank then go for it. For all these people out there saying hell no don't sign him... What else is out there in our price range? We got Hamels and Howard going to arbitration. I say stick with Pat Burrell if you can reach a reasonable deal.

How many strike outs... how many double plays did Pat hit into, or how many times did his wheels fail him or he was daydreaming and couldn't keep from running into a DP? I like Pat, I think he has some life left. Most of Burrells problems are between his ears. He has been a great Phillie and good for the clubhouse. But, I think it is time to move on. Thanks for the memories, we will always have 2008!

It is a good time to get younger. We have a good nucleus but we don't want them to all grow old together, what would be next.
If you can get similar production from a younger player, we should do it. Besides, Pat's foot is an issue and you have no way of knowing when his hobbling jog will become an outright walk.

I also like the idea of getting another contact hitter. We are know for strikeouts so someone to balance the lineup with a bit of contact would be good.
The only draw back is that there are very few decent righthanded OF bats availabe in free agency.

Apparently you can't spell either. The correct spelling is Greg Golson. Get your facts straight before making a fool of yourself.

send him over to the AL, where he will have many good years as a dh...phils need a mo mobile baserunner, defensive outfielder...play Jenkins in left for he makes big bucks and keep Werth in right and Victorino in center with Dobbs an occassional fill-in. Dump So Taguchi and be sure to sign Tad Iguchi to play for Utley while out.

when there were runners in scoring position, former Phil Bobby Abreu would take a walk rather than try and drive in the run...the Yankees do not want him anymore, but the Phils do not either...go to KC with CoCo Crisp.

1. Burrell should be resigned only if he agrees to a much lower salary and actually wants to finish out his career in Philadelphia.
2. He is inconsistent and has not been worth what he gets paid over the course of his last contract.
3. If the above can not be negotiated, then I agree with everyone else that AL is best place for him as DH. He is suspect on defense, he can't run and is inconsistent at the plate.
4. On the up side, he does still show he has power and can deliver 25+ HR per season for foreseeable future.

I am hoping Phillies can find a 3B and a C. The rest of the team is solid and there are 3 or 4 guys at Allentown or Reading who deserve a shot at MLB for Phils.

Burrell averaged about 30 HR's and 90-95 RBI's over his career with the Phillies.
1. You're not going to find that for any less than they're currenlty paying for Burrell (i.e., take a look at Abreu's numbers and he got paid significantly more...Burrell was a relative bargain for what he averaged. Check out Gary Matthews' stats. I'll take Burrell).

2. As Tom mentioned, your choices among free agents is already limited with 3/4's of the guys available way too old

With Utley now out for a few months makes Burrell even more needed. Sign him before he gets away.

This is not neccessarily true. Abreu did walk a lot due to amazing discipline. He has a great eye and does not hit balls out of the zone. Since going to the Yankees the hitting coaches seemed to have worked with him to be a little more daring and he actually cut down on his walks. For the record the Yankees like Abreu and reasons for possibly parting ways with him are because they want to go with somebody younger. The Abreu misinformation will not happen here!
