Aaron Heilman

Mets' best option for starter might be Perez

Full story: Newsday

LAS VEGAS Great job by the Mets in landing Francisco Rodriguez. They played it with poise, patience and precision, waiting out K-Rod until his market dropped, then quickly hammering out a three-year agreement.

I agree that the Mets did well with the K-Rod deal. They should be bold and make an offer to both Lowe and Perez. Hopefully they will end up with at least one of them, maybe they could end up with both.

Their next move should be to sign Orlando Hudson. He has offense, defense and a positive attitude. With Wright, K-Rod and Hudson in the Mets clubhouse, Jerry Manuel will have an easier time motivating his players.

i know the starter is a important position but is it more important then a quality setup guy right now. I feel if I was too put money into something a big setup guy is more important to me then a 3rd starter, Now not saying any starter will be able to plug the whole but we losed last two years due to bullpen melt downs vs starters. You can get a quality arm during the year easier then getting a quality setup guy.

Sorry Ken, but the reason the Mets bullpen blew so many leads last year was because they were terrible. Period. Oliver Perez was pretty solid for a long stretch last year, but I still remember him not being so good in September and early on in the year. Bringing him back really would be a crap shoot. I really can't decide which direction they should go on this one. But I will say this: If they do bring him back, they better have a new bullpen crew for those inevitable days when the "evil" Oliver shows up. And this is where I have zero faith in Omar. We need more than an elite closer. We need an entirely new bullpen. I'd bring back Smith for 1/2 of the innings he pitched last year, and I'd allow Stokes to compete for an extra spot/long reliever. I'd show Heilman, Schoeneweis, Sanchez and Feliciano the way out. Yes, Feliciano. Why does Omar love him so much? His ERA has gone from 2.09 to 3.09 to 4.05 since 2006. Are we waiting to see if he can top five runs per nine innings this year? Please ship him to whoever might want him. Get us some new relievers, and take some fliers on minor-league free agent relievers. Teams like St. Louis, Florida and Oakland have found gems the last few years with this route, not to mention the Philles with Chad Durbin.

I think Perez and Sheets wraps up the East for the Mets, as long as health issues stay at a minimum.

I totally agree with you. Next up should be a set up reliever. Heilman, Feliciano, and Schoenweiss need to go. Don't know why they didn't pull the trigger on Heilman and feliciano when they had the chance about a month ago.
With Sanchez they should see how his shoulder is and if he can get his velocity up to low 90's again. If he can't he needs to go too..
Don't forget they also need another bat in that lineup.

I agree with ACHANCETOBE30....get Heilman and Feliciano and Schoenweis out of here for Pete's Sake Omar. They were the culprits last year 9and the year before) during the chokes and not the starting pitchers. i have ZERO confidence in Omar in re-tooling the bullpen. he has already turned down an offer from the Rockies that would have sent Huston street to the Mets straight up for heilman and Feliciano...how the Heck do you not make that deal Omar?

As for starters, Oliver would be Plan B for me. i'd rather see Lowe or Burnett. Even Sheets would be better but he is too injury prone to give a big contract to. Great job on the K-Rod signing but they still have a long ways to go to be the elite team in the NL East that they want to be.

The Yankees just upped the price for all starting pitchers. Oliver Perez was overpriced at six million last year and had a bad season. He woulded be way over priced at 18 million this year. Lets go to plan B or is it plan G.

If Perez is the the Mets saviour then plan on losing. Again. I personally can not watch one more game with Perez pitching. I can't beleive with all the pitchers in baseball and the world that Omar can't come up with one. Gee. I wonder why?

K rod is good but relax people.

When is Omar leaving?

Wake up! That horrible bullpen blew 29 saves last year.. K-Rod was a huge pickup and adds at least 10-15 games they should have won.. Enlighten me Mister Bunker why can't Omar come up with one starter?.. and who did you have in mind?? he got Santana didn't he?.. are you sure you're a Met fan?? doesn't sound like it..

The Mets have to make a decision on Ollie soon. If they let him go, the need for a 200 inning starter becomes TOP priority. If they keep him, they will still need another starter IMO because Pedro is done! They need a catcher and a right handed power hitting outfielder, although it is not as high a priority as another starter. Castillo is a huge question mark at 2B although A.Reyes can play there.

What's wrong with Ollie? He's a good young lefty with above average stuff. In fact, for the money(160 mill), how many more games will C.C. win than Ollie? Tack on a Sheets(his forearm is healed) and you have the best starting staff in their division. Add and subtract several bullpen arms and nobody beats the Mets in 09!

Hey yankee fan.. Mets have Santana, Pelfrey and Maine and Santana is better than anyone on the yankees including Sabbathia. The bullpen blew 29 saves last year, add 10-15 wins with K-Rod and the NL east is ours.. doesn't matter what pitchers yankees get, their lineup is old and slow and thats why you sucked last year and will this year too.. get the trainers room ready for more broken down old players..

All the Mets have to do is trade Heilman and the bullpen will be significantly better. That guy alone lost 8 games last year.

He went 3 and 8 in 72 innings and then demands to be a starter or be traded!!!

Alou is done, Castillo is insignificant. and Delgado played in almost every game and had a great year. While your injury prone team is coming back... Jeter, A-Rod, Damon and Posada.. all on disabled list. and you can bet they'll be there again..

Alou is done because he broke down..again
Castillo is your second baseman...hardly insignificant.
Delgado had a great 10 weeks... he was TERRIBLE the rest of the season.

And out of the Yankees you named.. only Posado spent serious time on the DL, the rest of them had over 600 plate appearences each... so I'm not really sure where you are going with that one??

good post though.. accurate statements are always appreciated
