I don't think of Marshall as being very injury-prone...but I won't forget the strangest episode he had the other year...
The mere thought of a scratched cornea as a contact lens wearer sends shivers up my spine. To think this pitcher was talented enough to manage to get one during his sleep...simply amazing! |

This team spends a bazillion dollars and has: 1) No leadoff hitter; 2) An average outfield - both offensively and defensively; 3) Two guys vying for the closer's role - both of whom can't hold a candle to last year's closer, and 4) A situation where they still don't know who their fifth starter or middle relievers are going to be.
I also wonder if their aging first baseman is going to pull his annual 2-month disappearing act in the middle of the season again???? |

I'm curious: HOW does giving up 6 runs in two innings, and an ERA of 10.38 earn ANYONE a spot in the bullpen like Chad Gaudin got? It SHOULD have earned him a bus ticket to Tupelo.
Nooo, he'll be one the the "backbones" of a stellar bullpen I'm sure. Not. |

Yep, Clyde. Maybe Gaudin still thinks he's dumpster diving. Give someone else a chance who deserves it..

The Cubs will soon announce that Rod Blagojevich will be at Wrigley Field 7 times in the 2009 season to sing " Take Me Out To The Ballgame " before the bottom of the 7th inning.

I think i'm with you guys on Gaudin. He hasn't really done anything newsworthy since he arrived from Oakland, other than getting so blitzed he couldn't even walk that is.
Even though i really wanted Jake Peavy, and still do, my biggest concern thus far isn't pitching but the offense. I know nothing should be judged on spring training from the regular players, but after the way the Cubs offense looked in that playoff series, i cant help but be concerned. |

I guess the layoffs are hitting the Trib's editorial staff pretty hard:
"lowered his earned-run average to 0.68 with 41/3 innings Friday against the Mariners, whose the only run came on his throwing error." and "He was in a similar situation a year when the fifth spot was open." Obviously the writer knew what he was writing and just didn't include the full sentence that was in his head, and I know it's nit-picky, but still... |
