This is a very sad case for sure -- but I have never heard of any one, ever, huffing nitrous oxide to commit suicide. It's done to get high, not suicide.(A person doesn't die from nitrous oxide gas per se. It is not toxic -- The person usually dies from pure asphyxiation. But if inhaling from a canister, he would likely pass out, drop the canister, start breating room air, and revive.) Umless he/they rigged up a mask contraption or a bag over the head, this case still seems mysterious. This was most likely a mishap and not suicide. The question is still, however, was he alone or was he getting high with others at the time.
I'm waiting for Nancy Grace to switch gears and start harping on this one for a few years....
Not saying the NO was the instrument of suicide but something to assist in it. Get high put bag on head keep getting high to the point of passing out then suffocate.

Well anything is possible but this seems terribly improbable. It seems like a bad accident. I have never, ever heard of anyone intentionally trying to commit suicide by using nitrous oxide, with a bag or mask or whatnot. Most people wouldn't go for such a complex method, which may or not work and could simply leave the person brain damaged. This boy was likely just using it like everyone else, trying to get a buzz.

The question is still 'was he alone?'

Maybe the police or the coroner will eventually issue a decent report, assuming, of course, that Mayor Daley hasn't just leased out their functions to a private company somewhere, in which case we'll be waiting a long, long time....

My condolence to the family and friends of Benjamin Collen, but his death ruled an accident. From the article, No disciplinary action would be taken against the fraternity by its national leadership because Collen's death was an accident, McCulloch said Monday. From dictionary.com , an accident is an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap. Inhaling whippets it not an accident, there's more to this story.
You're an idiot.
There's a term called context- He didn't commit suicide, it what the article meant.

Yes, people DO commit suicide with nitrous oxide. They tie a bag over their head with a tube from a gas tank going up into the bag. They lie down and turn on the tank. Bag fills with gas and replaces oxygen. They pass out in a few seconds and die in about 5 minutes. Their body shakes as they die. It is painless. Yes, only 5 minutes to die, and a lifetime of suffering for their loved ones who are left behind. Please do not do this. Get help. Tell your family.

I found your post and want to confirm to anyone who is reading this that, indeed, nitrous oxide is used as a method of suicide. Like Linda said, it, and any form of suicide, causes a LIFETIME of suffering and crippling for those who are left alive and cared about that loved one...

This story was on a new series called 48 Hours Missing, just last night. The series sucks but this story was so sad. It appears to me that Ben was lonely and depressed after being kicked out of the frat house. He sneaked back in and commited suicide there. If he simply wanted to get high there's lots of places to do that. But to go back to his beloved frat house that he was banned from = suicide imo.

He obviously had a very very bad substance abuse problem (nitrous) and needed intervention. Too bad he didn't get help for his problem. He sounded like a very smart guy who the world could have benifited by his being in it. His parents seemed like good parents too. Such a loss.

My son did also, April 21, 2012. It's not that uncommon unfortunately.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Leo

You're in a very idealistic mood today, making it almost impossible for you to view loved ones in their true colors. If they've got any faults you won't see them because you'll have blanked them out. This rosy vision of your nearest and dearest is fine if it doesn't last long but it will cause problems if it persists and you continue to brush any problems under the carpet.
