oooooooh! oooooooh! i know why it failed. because ameriKKKan's won't stop calling it "gay marriage". the united states of ameriKKKa hates it's honest, hard-working, tax-paying, gay u.s. citizens. anything with the word gay in it, will be beat down like a little black boy whistling at a white woman. wait, there's no problem with that anology anymore. oh, well. the united states of ameriKKKa hates it's honest, hard-working, tax-paying, gay u.s. citizens. get used to it.

Katie O'Malley is absolutely correct, I just hope that the legislation hubby is looking at is not going to be another anti-freedom vote by the majority but rather a legal legislative vote by law makers.

Yes they were cowards, but there is a racial component to this which can't be overlooked and will be the key to whether this passes or not. Over 60% of blacks are opposed to marriage equality, and since any bill is almost certain to be put to a public referendum in November, passage will be an uphill battle.

At least we have better chances in Maine & Washington. If we can win even 1 of the 5 votes likely to happen this year, it will be a victory. Of course 2 or 3 wins would be even better!

The stronger correlation is older, less educated and more "religious" voters than black voters.

We know this because older, less educated and more "religious" white voters also vote against marriage equality.

I know from this kind of thread but also from threads on the criminal justice system that you have a tiny smidge of a 'race' problem, though. And that will probably never be fixed.

Sorry pal, even black leaders in Maryland admit blacks oppose marriage equality more than whites; even among younger voters. Every poll ever conducted shows the same thing. Whether that's because they're black or religious or less educated doesn't change the simple fact that blacks are more opposed to marriage equality than whites.

If you take 10 white & 10 black people of equal age, equal church attendance, equal education level, equal socio-economic status, equal political affiliation, etc., statistically the white people are more likely to support marriage equality than the blacks. If you want to call that racism, feel free; I call it reality.

That's why pro-equality groups in Maryland are reaching out SPECIFICALLY to the black community, not just the old religious uneducated community. So if I'm a racist based on that, then so is the NAACP, Equality Maryland, HRC, Freedom to Marry, ACLU, SEIU, Catholics for Equality, Maryland NOW, PFLAG, etc.

One can recognize differences in attitudes based on race without being a racist. If you completely ignore the racial component on this issue because of your white guilt, then it's guaranteed to fail once again.

Just to re-emphasize the point- an identical group of black voters is statistically MORE likely to be even MORE opposed to marriage equality than their white counterparts.

I'll need a link on that made up claim of yours.

Because I think that similarly "religious" and similarly comparatively undereducated and similarly comparatively elderly white voters' views will be like those of their black counterparts with the same characteristics regarding marriage equality.

That's what "stronger correlation than race" means. But again, I know from previous discussions you can't grasp this concept.

I understand the concept, but NO ONE believes your claims, which is why EVERY pro-equality group acknowledges that blacks are less likely to support marriage equality than whites- including the NAACP. EVERY poll I've ever seen shows blacks oppose marriage equality in greater number than their white counterparts. Polls show 60+% of white Catholics support marriage equality, while 60%+ of black Baptists oppose marriage equality, even though BOTH religions officially oppose marriage equality.

So until you can produce a single poll which shows equal support among black & whites, then I'll believe the experts like the NAACP, HRC, Equality Maryland, etc.

I don't think that you two are really in opposition on this. Your individual understandings ARE nuanced, though.

Yeah, he wants to pretend blacks don't oppose marriage equality, and thinks we should focus all our efforts on the massive opposition to marriage equality among white gay athiests!

If only we could get all the drag queens to vote for marriage equality, we'd have it locked down!!

You shouldn't need to "pretend" to be so stupid. You're as disingenuous and flaccid as any fundie.

I did not single out "white, gay atheists" as the problem.

I said whites who are poorly educated, older and more "religious" are the problem as much as their black counterparts are. Those aren't the white, gay atheists. Or the black, gay atheists.

You expressly denied that whites who are poorer, older and more "religious" are the same problem that blacks who are poorer, older and more "religious" are. I want your link on your made up claim, fabulist.

The reason you need to misrepresent my position and lie is that you don't wish to acknowledge your own, perfectly clear racial bias.

Every poll ever done shows a greater opposition among blacks than their white counterparts. If race is no factor, then why does every poll in Maryland break down their results by race? Why not just use age, religion, education, & gender as the only metrics?

Old people are more opposed than young people.
Fundie religious freaks are more opposed than normal people.
Uneducated are more opposed than educated people.
Men are more opposed than women.
And blacks are more opposed than whites.

You have no problem generalizing based on age, religion, education, & gender, but you're so afraid of being called a racist that you'll completely ignore the very same data from the very same organizations which shows a race-based correlation.

Take your white quilt to New Hampshire where you won't have to confront reality. If we ignore the anti-gay black vote in Maryland because people are afraid of being called a racist, then we'll lose just like we did in California.

I suppose it is because blacks are a very significant powerblock, especially in the large cities there, and the largest voting group there is brokered by a group known as "the ministers" or "the reverends", without whose endorsement nobody in the large cities can get elected. You'll also notice in your numbers that black women vote 5-1 over black men in the cities. Think "church sisters in their Sunday church crowns". The swing toowards Reublican among the voting black male populations is largely among the successful businessmen who are seeing their first generation of millionaires ... at least until the "recession".(I'm pretty sure that law enforcement is taking-but-not-taking notice of those whose fortunes have not diminished appreciably)

I don't deny the link of religion & the black community; obviously that's WHY they are more opposed to marriage equality. The only question I have is why does religion seem to have such influence on the black community on this issue, as opposed to white catholics and mainline protestants who seem to have no problem going against their church teaching on marriage. I've seen polls that show as much as 65% of catholics supporting marriage equality.

Facts: Statistically, a larger percentage of blacks oppose marriage equality. Read this article.(http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_scie... ) This is not racist.

Racist: Black people h8 gay marriage cuz they r sooooo stupid, OMG lol BBQ

----------

That racist statement was meant to be a joke, not my opinion.(For those who cant understand sarcasm, its okay, its a new thing)

I think the reason for these statistics is that black people, on average, receive a lower standard of education.(Whether this is from racism in the workplace, parents not earning enough simply because discrimmination, racism-motivated arrests..etc. I do not know, but the statistics are there).

People who are less educated are more likely to be idiotic bigots.
