10 Since you are a fair and balanced newspaper, i am sure that you will be having a hunter submit the facts to support hunting also. |

8 Then, they can all die of starvation, disease, predation, or impacts with automobiles... the way nature intended. And if more people have to die in deer-related car wrecks, or contract lyme disease thanks to deer overpopulation, that's too bad. Of course, surely the state can afford millions of dollars to fund deer birth-control programs with limited, dubious effectiveness and with unknown environmental consequences - right? I mean, please... don't we have a huge budget surplus or something? Or, maybe we could just let the hunters do their job - without interference from myopic, misguided anti-hunting activists whose real agenda is driven primarily by anti-hunter animosity, and not out of any real concern for wild animals that they claim they want to "protect". |

7 Please don't discount the large number of Marylanders who fully support hunting but don't do so themselves. |

15 The sad fact is that Dr. Lamp has probably never witnessed a clean archery kill. If he had, he would know that a razor-sharp broadhead that penetrates both lungs will cause such a rapid drop in blood pressure that a deer will fall unconscious in less then twenty seconds and be dead in under a minute. Dr. Lamp likes to use "facts" such as hunters waiting from thirty minutes up to three and four hours after the shot to track deer, is indicative of a bow's insufficient killing power. What Dr. Lamp fails to understand is that ethical hunters will always wait a proscribed amount of time before following game that has been arrowed, on the pretext that it is better to allow the game to expire without the threat of being pursued. It may be hard for most non-hunters to accept, but a deer that is dead on it's feet can run well over one hundred yards before expiring. Most bowhunters prefer that the deer wander off less than 50 yards without being pressured, and are willing to exercise the caution and patience required to ensure that the game is found. Bowhunting is a well-known and accepted method of deer hunting utilized by every state game department or commission in the United States. Certainly they must know something that Dr. Lamp does not. At the mimimum, they use facts and research, not emotions and personal opinion, as concerns the management of wild game. |

5 Maryland has started a new program of Bowhunter education, which I pray will become mandatory, that not only improves an archers skills at tracking, shot placement, and ethics, but it and test profiency which is the real reason that deer injuries and wounds occur. If your issue is to prevent wounding of deer, GREAT, I support you in every way... But your article meets my every expectation of the media, quick to point out opinionated problems but fail to support your argument with the counter point or any other intelligible evidence, much less provide a solution. You state that "bow hunting does not support clean kills" which is a completely false. As the state would not and does not support ANY method of hunting that does not provide clean, quick, and therefore ethical taking of game animals. This is why there are regulations for shot type, size, and weapon power. Its too bad that your opinion will fall on deaf ears due to your arrogance and ignorance of the real issues. |

6 If what you state above is true, let's take a moment to look at the number of wounded deer running around as a result of people driving too fast and hitting deer! How about putting your efforts into slowing these people down instead of going after a small group of people that are trying to help stave off large scale starvation because of people like you that, other than spouting obsurdities about archers wounding deer, you keep the season bag limits so tight that we get a population explosion? Then you have the audacity to whine about the deer eating your precious azalias and running into your expensive little car. How many deer have you yourself wounded with your BMW? Did you offer the poor, suffering deer any relief or did you, as most people, drive on complaining about how much it was going to cost to repair your expensive gas guzzler? Yeah, I thought so. You are so misinformed as to what happens to a majority of the deer after being shot with an arrow. I can tell you, being a professional hunter, an instructor of most hunting disciplines, that 99% of my deer harvested with a bow expire within 30 yards of the place they were shot - they expire before they have any idea what happened. You really need to stop taking out of context bits and pieces of articles that support your argument, seeking out only those people that support your argument, and report the truth. The only effective way to control urban deer populations as we have in the Greater D.C. Metropolitan area is with a bow - not snipers. Would you rather have large scale starvation? You, sir, are an idiot. Get out and learn first-hand what goes on in the woods, or are you as so many others afraid of the truth and dislike the heat, the cold, and the bugs? |
