I am thinking of buying the wife a 2006 RAV4 I4 limited but I keep hearing about excessive wind noise, whining engine and rough ride.... we live in Dallas.

Anything to these problems?

Appreciate your comments

As far as the noise that you guys are hearing, it may tarnsfer gear noise that you are hearing. Some transaxle manufactures use chains to connect the drive and driven sprockets and some use transfer gears to connect the transmission with the differential section of the transaxle. The transfer gears are a stronger design, however, sometimes produce a noticeable but harmless noise. In my own '06 I can produce this noise at @ 40mph and light on the throttle

a buzzing noise could be air in the power steering pump , low power steering fluid or contaminated fluid in the steering system .

i have the same noise issue from engine. i took it in last month and they said it "NORMAL "- the timing chain always makes that noise. i know it was not there when i first got it so i took it back yesterday and they are finally going to take something apart and look further into the situation.did you find anything out ?

I hear the noise too and had it checked out by the mechanic. They told me it was not a problem, but such a loud noise cannot not be a problem (sorry for the double negative). The reason no one hears it at a higher speed is because the road noise overtakes it, but the minute the speed is reduced, the sound comes back again and at times inconsistently. I'm bring in my car at the 10,000 mile interval to have it rechecked again at a different dealership.

I heard a loud humming sound in my Rav4 two days after I bought it. Took it into the dealer for repair. They said the sound was coming from the fuel pump (under carriage below the 2nd row seat, behind driver's seat). They replaced the fuel pump twice, and fuel tank once, & it still has the sound. It's often louder than my radio, and seems to be louder at higher speeds.

I hear a strange noise from the front of my 1998 Toyota corola. It only makes this noise when I turn the steering wheel to the right and only after I have driven it for about 10 miles. One front end mechanic put on new tires because he thought that was the problem, but that didn't help. It sounds like a tire out of round and sometimes sounds as if something was hitting againt something. Most of the time when the mechanic is with me we can't hear the noise, but latter it really sounds off. Thanks

My 07 rav 4 has only about 600 miles on it and I hear the same noise I think I can pin point it to the transmission. As I move thur the gears it is a low humming noise, but put it in neutrual and it is rattles low like gears are disengaged. Very upset about this. It is going to the dealer on FRI>

There is no power steering pump present in either the 06 or 07 Rav 4 any body style. Toyota chose to use Electric Steering in this vehicle which can make a buzzine noise.

Just purchased sport model 07 rav v6 and having a hard time not getting a ticket. OMG
The buzzing noises you all talk about most likely are coming from the new electric steering unit.
There is no power steering pump on this vehicle.
For those of you with Yokohama tires, replace them because they also make a ton of noise on the road at 30-50 mph naturally. So far, radio works fine but the steering seems a little under powered at low speeds.
thanks

Thanks, that's good info Daniel. I have a 2006 Rav4 V6 and it makes a humming noise too( I hear it when I am stopped). It makes the noise in drive and neutral, but not in park. May be the electric steering pump shuts off in park? I have 3200 miles
and my radio still works. No complaints about wind noise or road noise. I find the car actually quiet.
