I read in another thread some guy talking bad about the Volt and using CR as a reference. Volt is judged by the real life experiences of owners.

Root, perhaps your reading skills are somewhat lacking, Consumer Report Magazine actually bought a Volt and tested it without bias in any way. This accomplishes a couple of things.(1) since they BOUGHT a Volt they became a real life owner.(2) since they do not take advertising they have no backs to scratch and no need to distort the truth.(3) consumer report is acknowledged as the Bible of facts for consumers. As far as the other real life owners of the Volt, if you just paid between 43 and 48K for a car that was not all that was advertised, would you admit to have being taken for that amount of money? Reminds me of the late 70s when we had the gas shortage and the big rage was a screen that you could purchase for a fairly large price that you would place under the carb and supposed that your fuel mileage would about double. I knew quite a few people who bought that Pig in a Poke and most of them would not admit to have being taken, however, I did notich that not one of them bought a second one for their other car.

There was a survey not too long ago sent to Volt customers to see the satisfaction rate. I forget exactly what the number was, but the percentage was extremely high. Just like GM calculated, most customers go less than 40 miles a day. Most of the customer testimonials had Volt's with several hundred miles on them, still with the original tank of gas. Needless to say, the Volt is very practical......ask an OWNER, not a magazine who bought one. Consumer Reports is only read by people who have no idea what something simple like an axle is. Mechanics and "car guys" all over the US who read consumer reports usually end up in laughter. Consumer Reports is the pinnacle of incorrect.

I have been very disappointed in Consumer Reports through the years. Much of their information is lopsided and messy. As for the Volt I have learned that it is very practical and the mileage is unbelievable. We are keeping track of it (coworker) drives 14 miles to and from work daily. The car is just at two months. Trips to the gas station? Zero!

Oh, forgive me oh great one of infinate knowledge, however, GM has admitted to the demand for the volt being much less than thought, ergo, the plant is shut down for five weeks because of lack of demand. You talk about people who do not know something simple like an axle? Actually that axle on most cars is now called a half shaft due to the fact that there are two in a front wheel drive car and each goes into the transaxle case. For the record, when I was young I worked as a mechanic and have driven racecars for much of my life, both in SCCA where I have driven a D Production TR-4 and a H Production Austin Healey Sprite and when I turned 50 and retired I built and raced a first generation Mazda RX-7. Inbetween I raced a Ford at a local NASCAR short track for a long time racecar owner in the area. Now, define a Car Guy and why you qualify as one, is it because you drive your "Moms" GM truck with the 176K miles on it? Is it because you could not spell Hyunadi or did not know the cost of a Volt as compaired to an Elantra? By the way, Gm man which would be more correct as GM man, what type of work do you do or are you, as I believe, still in the ninth grade? GM at one time meant General Motors, however, since they had to take the government welfare in order to survive have now been renamed "Government Motors".

Actually the axle on most vehicles is called an axle as most vehicles sold are actually trucks, SUV’s and CUV’s not front wheel drive cars. You sound rude.

And from what I remember on a front wheel drive car doesn’t the CV joint hook into a CV axle? I think half shaft is just another name for the CV axle no?

Sorry but my reading abilities are just fine. I am taking the word of real owners over anything CR magazine says. I have found the human to be a much more reliable tool then magazines.

I will ignore your condescending tone, it really does one no good here. Meanwhile, you seem to be vexed that Consumer Reports has little to no credibility. In other words, you started a little conversation of your own, in a petty attempt to question my knowledge of automobiles. Try again later, it makes me laugh.

If you wish to get very technical about it, the Constant velocity axle fits into the transaxle and at the other end there is a constant velocity joint that is covered by a boot that often gets torn and results from early wear in the joint. This joint allows for the movement of the front suspension.
