Hi....From reading many others with the same problems, I found out that this is one of the years made where there was a lawsuit because of a faulty engine. The check engine light remains on at all times. I've had it checked & checked by a few mechanics....no one seems to know what to do. Apparently, it's a sludge problem. I guess from what I've read, I don't want the engine to die while driving, especially on a highway. If you read about blue smoke in the Camry's, you'll see what I mean. I am a woman with a lot of knowledge about many things, however, not too much know-how regarding cars.:) But thank you for taking the time to respond.....

When the check engine light comes on, there's usually a reason and it stores a code which is a clue to the problem. A mechanic with a professional type OBD2 diagnostic scanner should be able to determine the cause.

I'm getting nervous because 150K is coming around the corner and according to the previous thread, the engine died at 150K. My check engine light never comes on but now that it turned on when I was on the freeway driving on a road trip, I am concerned! What to do! I am at 140,000 km 2002 camry and car hasitates to start must hold gas down a bit to catch with engine light on most of the time. Seems to run fine otherwise, checking mileage. Dealer suggested remove, clean gas tank for $ 400. I said no and went to indepedant garage and they changed gas filter in tank and all looked clean so saved $ 300.+ frustrated.

I always had oil change in dealer, but I had oil changed a week ago for my 2002 Camry le in Canadian tire. 4 days ago, it was -36c plus wind feel like -49. I helped my friend to jump start his 2001 Nissan pathfinder. Days after, I noticed the check engine light on. I also found out the clock was reset, and the outside temp displaying changed from C to F. It is about 200k, and never has check engine light on before. Did it cause by new oil change? Jump start? Or cold weather? Anyone has similar experience? THANKS

After the CEL on, it is running normal, oh yeah! I had a flat tire 2 weeks ago and replaced with spare tire temporally.

My 2002 Toyota Camry's check engine light keeps coming on. I've spent $2007 on: oil change, new toyota gas cap, new air intake valve, new idle air control valve, new cannister, new Yaw sensor, drive belt. Light is still ON! This is driving me crazy. What's up with 2002 Camrys?

What's up with 2002 Camrys? You should be asking what's up with the incompetent mechanic needlessly replacing parts on your dime.

I have a 2002 Toyota Camry with 110k+ miles. Oil is changed every 3,000 m.Check engine light is on, starts up rough, blue smoke upon start up, when I "punch" the gas it won't propell forward, has died a few times in the parking lot after being parked for short periods (5-15 min), starting again after 20+ minutes of cool down. Things that have been done: New "fuel to air ratio sensor" & "oxygen sensor";new spark plugs and full fuel injection service, PVC hose tightened. Check engine light still on, but it no longer refuses to start. Still other problems exists. Considering taking it to Toyota Service Center for other issues. Is this wise? Thoughts?

You need to find out what the code is that's causing the check engine light. Toyota will surely charge you big bucks. I'd try and find a local independent shop.
