When check the engine light is on, don't go to the dealer too soon. Try these two tricks first: Check the gas cover to make sure it is tightly closed. Turn the key to start the engine and hold it for a few seconds till the "check the engine" light is off. This may save you a trip to the dealer and at least $$ dollers for a check up.

I have this problem last week. After pump gas, my 2001 Camry engine check light on. It took me few days to find problem, check engine oil level, gas cap tight etc. Finally, I disconnected battery over night and reconnected. The engine check light was off! So don't go to dealer so quick!

Similar situation. Have found LOTS of similar posts for 2002 Camry. So far, it appears Toyota is NOT taking any responsibility, but it is far too common to be some vague "user error." Perhaps it takes a class action lawsuit to get them to own up!

My 2002 Camry's check engine light is on and it is approximately at 123K. I'm getting nervous because 150K is coming around the corner and according to the previous thread, the engine died at 150K.
My check engine light never comes on but now that it turned on when I was on the freeway driving on a road trip, I am concerned!
What to do!

Not necessarily a big deal....go to a good shop (or a dealer, if your flush) and have the code read. If you've been regularly changing the oil every 3500 or so, you shouldn't have any worries. Also, flush the coolant and transmission fluid every 36K. Odds are it'll run forever. YMMV.(your mileage may vary).

I also had the check engine light start coming on. Found that at 115K, I needed a new gas cap. Also got some bad gas in New Jersey. Now my oil light is coming on and then check engine. Down a quart of oil or so but no evidence that I am burning oil. Seems Prompto may not know how much oil a 2002 Camry takes.

Oil light on, however, IS a big deal. Hope you don't have the dreaded sludge problem.
