When you read Javed post he said this shaft was replaced for $525.00.
This repair does not cost $1,000 as far as I know. The clicking sound is the shaft problem and the squeak is solved with oil or grease.

Ask another Toyota dealer about the cost. There is a TSB out on this problem and the squeak.

OK - funny that I found this site because my 2003 Toyota Camry ALSO has a very squeaky sound when I turn the wheel. Much worse when cold or in cold weather. Has any one gotten the dealer to pay for any of this under a recall or anything??? Or do I really have to pay $525 to get it fixed?? HELP - Mary

I had my 2003 XLE serviced today. One problem was the steering wheel squeak. As part of diagnosing
a check light that went on, the dealer lubricated the steering wheel at no cost, and the squeak is gone.

I have a 96 Camry and start having problem. Same when I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right it makes this noise. Then I noticed that that the power steering is not working from time to time. So I brought it to mechanic and they replace everything power rack & pinion steering, align the car. Paid $850. It worked for a while then after couple days same problem. So I brought back to them and they replace the P/S Pump for free and labor. Took home the car after 2 days same problem again. The mechanic has no clue how to fixed it they already replace the rack & pinion twice and P/S pump, now they are replacing all the hose hoping there is nothing blocking the flow of the P/S liquid. Though they are not charging me for anything even though I know it's taking a lot of their labor time and replacing the parts for free as they should had fixed it right at the beginning. The car was in the shop for days now. One possible problem Toyota told them that it could be the Flow Pressure Valve. But Toyota dealer told them they do not make that part anymore. Not sure how true it that so mechanic is calling for junk yards to get use one. So far no luck !. Anybody having this problem and what could possibly wrong that this cannot be corrected. Thanks

If you are still under warranty. Take the car back to the dealer to have the steering shaft replaced. I've been asking why the nosie for years and no dealers have tell me why under now. It will get worse under you have difficulty turning the wheels on the highway. Look like a bad design to me.

I had the same problem with a 2002 Camry. The actual proble is a universal type joint in th steering column called the "steering intermediate shaft". Toyota has a big problem with these things. My mechanic told me you can't get these parts from toyota any more. He said Toyota is making owners pay for a complete steering column replacement! My mechanic found a used on on the market. it fixed the sticky turning problem, but I don't know for how long.

Right on the money. Thats exactly what it was. I had the same problem, read you bulletin and checked it. Added a little white grease around the gasket and the noise is gone. Happens more in the winter as this part gets colder and hardens.

My 2000 Camry wheel squeaked ("whimpered" seems more accurate) from about 2001. After reading this thread, I had them lube the column at the firewall. It's only day one, but it's completely silent.

my 2003 camry also has that clicking noise. does that have to be fixed? will continue clicking cause other things to wear quickly.

I also have a steering noise, but it only sounds like the rubber rubbing against the rubber. Is that a problem as well?

MY '03 Camry has the Here is a link to the TSB.

What angers me is that this is a known issue, and while I understand TSBs are NOT recalls, why the hell won't Toyota fix it like one? It SHOULD be a recall! This is in the sterring column!

TSBs are nothing more than an excuse for a car company have you pay for THEIR design/manufacturer defect!

Nick, I believe a recall is for a serious safety or mechanical issue. A squeek in the steering column, while annoying, probably doesn't qualify.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Scorpio

If something is bothering you, it's important that you say so now, loudly and clearly. It's no good bottling things up any longer because that will only lead to resentment and a slow-burning anger. However, it's important that you know when to shut up too, otherwise you might overstate your case or sound so demanding that you turn others against you.
