I have a 2003 Camry with only about 47,000 miles. Shortly after a gas fill-up the "Check engine" light came up. I was told to tighten the gas cap and the light would go out in 50 to 100 miles. The gas cap did'nt seem to be loose. After 400 miles the light was still on. Took the car to the Toyota dealer. They said I needed a new gas cap and a filler tube. This was going to cost $312.35 plus tax. Wow! This doesn't sound kosher to me. It cost me about $80.00 for the diagnostics. Haven't done anything yet -- of course the light is still on. I believe that Toyota should issue a recall on this item. Anyone else thinking like that?

I have a 2003 Camry with 169,000 miles, just like everybody else, I wass told I have a gas cap and filler tube problem and quoted 500.00 dollars to get the light off and fix the problem. I agreed to pay before reading all of these posts and now I'm wondering if I just got taken for a fool. Five hundred dollars for a new gas cap and a problem that Toyota has known about for almost ten years. I was about to buy a new Toyota but now I'm going FORD. Who would have thought. Very dissapointed in you toyota. Learn to take responsibility.

Toyota has not, to my knowledge, recalled any cars for this problem. You just got charged more than an independent shop would have charged. Your car is almost nine years old with 169K on it. Not too bad.

I have a 2003 camry with 40000 miles and went to the dealer for the check engine light and it costed me $800 to fix it. Last year had to work on the brakes and 30000 miles service and that was $700. It is a high maintaince vehicle.

brakes might be the way you drive, FSB. check your habits. Lots of start & stop city driving, or fast stops or forgetting to release the parking brake might contribute to brake job at 30K miles.

As Fran says, it all depends on your type of driving.

2003 Camry with about 49,000 mi. Check engine light on. (I could smell gas around the gas cap area after driving the car). I was told the car needed a new filler tube and gas cap for about $325. This diagnosis at the Toyota dealer cost $75.00 I bought a new gas cap on my own and no longer smell gas, but the check engine light is still on. I think that if there is a problem with the filler tube, Toyota should be held responsible since they have known of this problem for a long time. I will think twice before buying another Camry.

I have a 1994 Camry LE 4cyl 2.2L, 4 door. I've had to replace the fuel filler neck/tube twice now. Try ordering on-line. I found one for $69.00 +/- and got my back yard mechanic friend to replace/reinstall w/ new one 3-4 years ago. Now, I smell gas around my car and when I gas up, I can see gas drips coming from just in front of driver side rear tire. Grrr... time to replace again. Don't think posts suspecting gas cap problems are the likely culprits.

See if you can find out if the filler neck is actually rusted. If it is, replace it and before installing it, coat the neck with a thick coating of heavy chassis grease.

I have had this problem on three Camry LE's - 4 cyl. The first with my 95 with 260K miles. Door broke off during refeuling a couple of years ago. Because of the age of the car I did not repair the door. Junked the car in January of this year. The second car is a 98 with 150K miles. About six months ago the door became difficult to close. At this point (Feb 2012) it will not close. Because the car needs emissions work (at a dealer estimated cost of $1500+ I have decided to trade it in on a new car. The third car is a 03 with 132K miles. Dealer cost to replace the door was $197. Local body shop did the job at $169. I also own an 08 Camry with 49K miles. No indication of a door problem yet.

May I suggest you get a can of WD40 and keep the gas door hinges lubed on the 08?
