The gas cap has to be put on correctly. Mine says until it clicks one time. This can cause the check engine light to come on. If the neck has not been damaged in some way, that should not be part of the problem.

It might need a new cap but an inspection should give you an idea of an cap peoblems.. I do not think it needs a new filler pipe installed.

there is a tsb on this particular issue and some do have surface rust on the filler necks which will intervertinly cause a leaking cap

I have just had the replace the filler pipe diagnosis. My estimate was about $275 from the dealership by the way. I was really ticked off because my check engine light has been coming on for the 1.5 years and it's taken them this long to find this problem. To me it's unacceptable that a car with 55K on it has a problem like this. Especially one so highly rated as the Camry! It should have been a recall item.

My check engine light came on. The dealer discovered that filler neck had corrosion on it and needed to be replaced along with the cap. The estimate is $385.00.

What's going on? My check engine light came on also and yes I was told that I need to replace my fuel filler neck for $325. I have 58k miles. I would not have expected this from Toyota.

I just received the same diagnosis from a dealer for a 2003 Camry with 33K. Is the repair really necessary? Cost in NYC is about $350-$400.

I just got the same thing on my 2003 Camry. It's very irritating to say the least and I'm not ready to throw $350 away on this. I am going to try to clean the rust corrosion off first then buy a new $10 gas cap and see what happens. By the way Auto Zone can diagnose your problem for free instead of paying $40 to Toyota to hook it up to the same hand held computer gadget Auto Zone has. Why are these gas filler necks corroding the way they are? I've never had another car do this.

I am having the same problems. My fill necks metal part that the gas pump nozzle connects to is also rusted and pitted. I noticed almost all the comments come from areas that receive snow fall and/or have high humidity.

my mom's 2001 camry had the engine check light on too. something about a filter or a filler under the hood, and it cost $400 to replace in chicago. a week later it came on again and they said something about the charcoal box next to the tank was disconnected, maybe they didn't secure it enough after testing and some driving disconnected it

Check engine light on my 2003 Camry came on two weeks ago -- 33,000 miles. Told there was an evap system incorrect purge flow and paid $500 for a new sensor and told that would solve problem. Check engine light came on twice since, and now am told it may be the gas cap. From all the above comments, sounds like this can be quite the ordeal. I'm going to purchase a new gas cap and see if the problem is hopefully solved.

My 2003 Toyota Camry, 33,000 miles had check engine light come on with code PO441 incorrect evap system purge flow. Spent 2 days being smoked to see where leak was, and then told it was the sensor which needed to be replaced.$500 later, told all was well. That was last week. Today check engine light came on again and code now is PO442, small emission leak which they said could be the gas cap!!!! Will buy a new gas cap and hopefully this will solve this problem. Sounds like too many people having similar problem with their Camry's.

My 2003 Camry also had the following codes within the last 3 weeks, P0442 & P0456. Discovered that there is a Toyota TSB #02206 that describes the problem as rust on the fuel filler neck. Yup, they are right, that is exactly my problem. Problem is this TSB came out in April 2006 and was only good for cars less than 3 years old and 36000 miles. Hmmm, Camry 2003, TSB 2006, makes you think doesn't it. Cost to repair 3-$400. Not a happy Camry owner.

My 2003 Camry also had the engine check light on. I took it to a shop and they hooked up a machine to diagnosed the problem - filler neck corrosion. My car has 68K miles. I spent about $275 on parts and labor. My family owned 5 Camry during the past 10 years. None had this problem even at 200K miles, except this 2003 Camry.

Toyota needs to come clean about this issue. I have a Camry 2004 and was told I have a leaky filler neck and need that and a gas cap plus the sensor blew out. I will never buy another Toyota again because the company has been aware this is an ongoing problem and won't own up to fixing it and improving the situation for future models.

I just had a friend over with a 2003 camry with a po442.When i checked the gas cap the filler tube is rotted and pitted real bad .she still has warranty. I cleaned some of the rust off and did evap test and it passed. She is going to the dealer to see if they will replace tube.Being emissions related Toyota should cover this problem

After having the check engine light on my 2003 Camry since June -- and having it go through two smoke tests with no leakage befing found -- mechanic finally found a pin hole in the filler tube which was replaced today. Part was backordered for about 3 weeks now -- since it seems to be a popular item!!! Owned a 2000 Camry and didn't have this problem. Definitely only a 2003 Camry issue.
