Road trip: More families set to hit highways this year

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Mary Dulik is heeding the siren call of the road this spring, remembering the annual odysseys to Florida her family used to make in borrowed station wagons and camper vans during her 1970s childhood.

In the 50's and early 60's we traveled the USA in our Chevrolet to see America with our parents and the new "Interstate" system. There was no A/C, no FM, tape, CD or iPod, no video games, or DVD in the back of the seats, there was "Car Bingo," and of course flash cards to learn your multiplication tables. It was long, hot, but at the end of the day there was the motel with the swimming pool. Those are the trips I remember the most! Good times, even when I hated flash card time!

Family vacations can be a wonderful experience...or NOT...but, one-day drive to Branson, MO is very doable...the shows are all clean...there are rides and facilities for kids and many inexpensive places to stay and eat...people are very friendly and it the atmosphere is like stepping back into the 50s...

the days of the long lost road trip... we once (along with one reletives family) drove to ft. lauderdale, florida with 17 kids and 3 adults in a cadillac and a van. my mother says "in this day and age, we could have gone to jail for the way we transported you kids back and forth." and that drive was the real memory. i will say, at the age of 34, there is something about getting on the open highway that is so liberating to me. I LOVE IT!

Quite accurate analysis and sentiments. I still remember several cross-country jaunts in our big GM wagons in the 70s and 80s. Flying simply was not considered at the time. Now, my own family can generally afford airfare, but we are so sick of the airport hassle that our next trip will be by minivan.

All road trips are memeorable, especially if something goes wrong.

On a trip to Colorado, we ran into a snow storm. Because the roads were closed, we had to get a hotel room - along with everyone else. Luckily, we had called ahead and got a reservation. My husband walked into a full lobby of people vying for any room available. The clerk asked if anyone had reservations and he was the only one. We had our choice of waiting until 3pm (it was 11 am) to (maybe) get a poolside room or take what was available. We took the sure thing. Our girls were very disappointed at not being poolside. But, in the morning when they saw all the cots in the ballrooms (yes, more than one), they were very happy we had a 'private' room.

Don't forget - there's always Greyhound. You can't get much cheaper than that.

It would have to be a very small wall.
