Upset? Mazda had no competition, it was a forfeit. Small convertibles aren't a big niche, GM proved there is room for more than one player. Bob Lutz did a good job of giving the Solstice it's own personality.

After the novelty wears off, the sales figures will change. The Miata is lighter, handles more nimbly, has a top that flips open one-handed, while sitting, in less than 5 seconds, and has a track record of great quality. The Solstice is more gimmicky. Has a little more power, but not enough to overcome the weight and inferior handling components. The Solstice's top is not user friendly, and has more twists, buttons, turns, and latches than a medieval torture device. The trunk space is even smaller than the Miata. To top it all off, unless something has changed, they will have to deal with Pontiac "quality" as well. As for styling, I think the Solstice is overstyled and cheesy looking. The Saturn Sky looks MUCH better. The Miata is not as flashy, but has a more classic, and classy, style that will still look good 20 years from now. The Solstice's appearance won't stand the test of time. |

I think that is right on the money thinking. I do not actually like the newest NC Miatas, but the last two models the NA and NB are hands down better cars.
There is no comparison in the Wow factor, Miatas are lighter, get better gas mileage, handle much better, beat Pontiac's at the AutoX all day long, and are here to stay. |

Glad the Solstice is outselling it. The new Miata looks like crap and has become some sort of twisted executive car that costs about 10 thousand dollars more than an "affordable roadster" should cost.
And the Solstice design is overstyled? How about it actually looks good and is actually UNIQUE instead of the horrid not-amused generic toy car facade the Miata has now (or actually, with the new one, an exaggurated disgusting wide smile). Old Miatas over the Solstice, but Solstice over the new Miatas. |

I don't like either one, but the Solstice is going down the drain since GM is dropping the pontiac line.
I have an older 2000 Miata LS an don't believe I would trade it even up for a new one. They are butt ugly |
