The administration should be ashamed of itself. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mr. Sampson file a lawsuit with the EEOC concerning the hostile environment the University condones. His co-workers should be reprimanded for their intolerance. Just goes to show that racism has no color. Blacks can be equal opportunity offenders. Next time maybe they will read the book before they get so offended.

What you have at IUPUI is a bunch of sanctimonious self-described victims too ignorant to know what is in a book and too stupid to try to find out. Indiana University is becoming increasingly well known for its willingness to trample the First Amendment rights of its students - both by this example and in Bloomington by banning "bring back Bobbie" T-shirts.

This takes the cake ! What in the world is this university doing ! The book is carried in their own library . I have read this book and it would be good reading for all faculty , admin people etc.. Totally anti Klan writing . Proud of the students at Notre Dame that stood up to the Klan . Who are the employees that are offended ? Blacks (they shouldn't be) or Klansmen (who should be but tough) This victim crap has to stop . Mr. Sampson , don't drop this . Call for accountability .

Before anyone jump on the side of Mr. Sampson the should get all the facts. Mr. Sampson has came to other empolyees in a racist way. So, when they seen him reading the book yes they were offened by the title alone. It really dont matter any more because the universtiy had split the group up. And was planing to before this incident. I can't believe that the star is even reporting this. This took place about six months ago.

I can't believe how long it took the Star to report this travesty. They no doubt had to abandon their cover-up when the incident was taken up by national news outlets.

I can understand that the Star did not want to embarass IUPUI but this outrageous behavior needed to be exposed.

This is political correction taken to the level of insanity. With this reasoning I am a Nazi for reading about Nazi Germany, a Muslim because I have read the Koran, a Jew because I have read the Old Testament (I happen to be a Deist). Well, if this is the case, then just hand a gay person a book about being straight and instantly they will be straight. I have read books about the underground railroad and slavery. Does that make me a racist? This is a story that many Blacks want told. Well, if it makes you a racist to read such books, who dare read them?

We pay tax dollars to support institutions like IUPUI and they waste it on stupidity such as this. Do these institution ever consider the message they send when their actions reach the insanity level? The "devil" must have be behind political correctness (if you believe in a devil and I don't, but you get the idea!).

We have the constitutional right to read any literature we desire. IUPUI needs to get a "life" and deal with issues that might actually have meaning.

Deborah Saunders a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle found out about it and wrote about it in her national column. Now the real racists at the University are the laughingstock of the entire United States. These days, racism has no color.

We need an official comment from the University of Notre Dame defending the admirable guts ND students had fighting the Klan in Indiana when the Klan was very powerful .Also defending first amendment rights especially on a college campus .Apparently IUPUI doesn't understand this concept .The lady in the administration who so ignorantly chastized Mr. Sampson needs removed .I'am an IUPUI graduate . This incident is embarrassing .

I attended classes and worked with Mr.Sampson so I have known him for almost 20yrs. and in no way is he a racist. He has read most of the books in IUPUI's and IMCPL Libraries; and should be allowed to read whatever he want's on his break. Because he does not spend his breaks watching TV, talking on the phone,or sleeping, as many of his co-workers do; does not make his behavior racist or antagonistic. He can discuss any topic beyond just the headlines you read in the "Newspaper". The Affirmative Action Office serves to protect IUPUI and in no way works to protect employees. If you want to file a grievance do not go to the Affirmative Action Office expecting any support from them.

Well said. This situation is a stunning display of sheer stupidity by few folks at IUPUI.

Who made up the obviously concocted "anonmous" post? I'm a white middle-aged guy who grew up on the south side of Chicago, and that post made me laugh. It sounded exactly like some of my old somewhat bigoted friends who like to pretend they can speak "ebonically."

For the record, shame on IUPUI then; and good for them now...it took long enough to resolve this nonsense.

Does the Affirmative Action Office have equal representation of all races in the office? Are Asians and Caucasions also represented? If not, an investigation needs to be opened. The EEOC and ACLU should be immediately notified. This might be an outrage.

A so-called place of higher education and intellectual inquiry?

Not from the sound of it.

Alums should be complaining because their IUPUI degrees just depreciated.

Take a look at the IUPUI Affirmative Action Office website. If they're SO afraid of people seeing the word 'klan' or 'KKK', then why do they have a huge article about the klan...HOSTED ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE!!!!
http://www.iupui.edu/~aao/kkk.html
You cannot make this stuff up... What hypocritical ignoramuses.

Y'know, its bad enough when feelings trump facts and/or individual liberties; now, ignorance trumps everything. If the folks who were so busy being offended had taken the time, they might have learned something. But it is really much easier to get offended. This is reminiscent of that case in D.C. where some government workers didn't know the meaning of the work niggardly and were to busy being offended to look it up. Amazingly, if memory serves, the speaker was sanctioned over this.

Hey IUPUI, wake up. Your job is to teach students to think, to examine, to be critical. Situations like this seem to indicate that the institution is off course.

The best line in the article stated that the student/worker was a few hours short of a degree in COMMUNICATIONS. Now that's funny.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Capricorn

You're keen to look on the bright side of things and to ignore anything unpleasant or worrying. That's fine, provided that you're ready to face up to life's difficulties again tomorrow. But it's not such good news if you persist in looking the other way whenever a problem presents itself, especially if it's connected with your work or health. It may be time to face a few facts, Capricorn.
