Anyone had trouble with your CR V air conditioner? My dealer said it might be covered under a "warranty". Mine is a 1999. I would be curious just what this "warranty" is.

It's called a "goodwill warranty".

Google "CR-V: AC Compressor Issues" and you will find lots of information.

Well, my CR-V's air conditioner just died and it's a 2003. I've seen lots of other CR-V owners with the same problem. Thanks for the info, Dragonfly.

My 01 CRV compressor blew up over the summer. It had 44000 miles on it. I called Honda and they replaced the entire air conditioner system as a "goodwill gesture warranty." Pretty impressed by that. Obviously, there is an issue with the system.

Call Honda Corporate and plead your case. They have a "goodwill gesture warranty" and they might cover your system. They did mine?

What exactly do you have to plea? Mine went ou tyesterday:( I have two kids and live in Texas and it is still hot here. The car is only a year old. It is a 2002. If it had blown up LAST month I could have had it under warranty. What can I do?

I bought a used 04-CRV in september and the dealer (Indy Honda) did not tell me that the A/C was bad and made me sign the As-is document. When I went home I suspected that the A/C is not getting cold so I made a check from the dealer and found that the copressor had blown and metal contaminated. The dealer said he wont do anything as I have signed the as-is document. then I called up american honda and they investigated the case and the dealer told them that I knew the a/c is bad still i bought the car (which is a lie. why shd i buy a bad a.c car) american honda declined to give any kind of assistance. i called up dealer 100 times but they are not ready to take up the expenses and neither honda is. what should i do now? i have been decived by the dealer. should i file a law suit against the dealer? what do u suggest?

You could always try the Better Business Bureau or the State Attorney Generals Office.

My company car is a CRV and I am on my second one. The AC compressor exploded on the first one at 45K miles. The compressor exploded today on my second CRV at 52K miles. Both vehicles were less than 3 years old at the time. I am done with CRV's.

The a/c died on my 2002 Honda CRV, made in Japan, last summer, and "contaminated the entire a/c system." Dealership told me it would cost $3000 to repair - DIDN'T tell me this is an ongoing issue with CRV's and that I might get some help from Honda of America. Found out Honda helps out sometimes -- called them a couple of weeks ago, and they REFUSED to help with the cost. Who has $3000 to spend on an a/c repair? We get 90 degree and above summers here in Northern Virginia, beginning in late May, and it's too much heat to bear without a/c. Has anyone out there had any luck persuading Honda to come clean and fix what is clearly a factory defect? Would appreciate some advice on how to deal with Honda of America. Thanks very much.

Our 2004 CRV a/c compressor died 2 months after the warranty ended. The dealer we bought the car from quoted $1300. A little research showed that a reman compressor can be bought for under $400. We bought a Honda because of their reputation for reliable cars. A compressor self destructing at 38 months does not jibe with this reputation! The dealer said Honda "may" help us out on this issue. Given that this is definitely NOT an isolated problem, if Honda wants my future business, they need to make this right--not just for me, but for everyone that has had this problem.

Well I thought I would add to this post as well. I purchased a used 2003 CRV last summer, at the end of the year the a/c seemed to be blowing warm air. I got it checked out by a local mechanic and sure enough the a/c compressor is junk...not quite blown up but very close. I contacted Honda Canada and they blew me off and told me that "goodwill warranties simply do not exist" and that because I didn't purchase an extended warranty that this fell into my lap. I don't know what the cost to fix it will be yet but can well imagine it won't be cheap. Oh and my car only has 48000 kms...I have had 2 civics and a CRV, this will be our LAST HONDA!!!

I didn't know then, by the a/c compressor on my 2003 CRV blew last weekend (sounded like a flat tire). I took it to dealer today and they fixed it under Goodwill warranty. Cost me $53. Actual repair costs was >$1100. Service guy said he hadn't seen this happen in all his 8 years. After reading this thread, I find that these CRVs are blowing compressors left and right. Something hinkey, that's for sure. Good luck all!

My a/c compressor went out on my 2002 Honda CRV (118,000 miles) about two weeks ago. I had it checked out by two dealerships quoting me a price of $1400 and $1500 to replace the compressor, clutch and magnet. One dealership gave me an option of doing 90-days same as cash.
I explained to the service department manager that I have supporting documentation that the compressor is defective for that particular year, make and model and requested that he contact Honda Corporation. He said all he could do is fill out a form and send it to his Regional Department Service Manager. I ended up calling American Honda Corportation and pleading my case with them and they contacted the dealership. My compressor, clutch and maget will be replaced at their expense, but I have to pay for the labor. Getting the quotes, calling the corporation and getting the end result took one day.

I live in Northern California. My Honda CR-V has 92K miles. It ran fine in all respects. But the A/C compressor quit in the middle of a road trip over this weekend. Made a whirring/thumping sound. I went to an out of town Honda dealer who quoted $2800 for repairs to replace the full A/C system due to contamination. The service person was initially scaring me by saying that it is very unsafe driving with a bad compressor and that I should repair it before heading back home. But the mechanic said that it is safe if the A/C is not switched on. Car ran fine driving home with A/C off. Had to deal with driving in 100+ deg heat with family. Really disappointed with the so called Honda reliability.
Must be a design flaw with the A/C - nobody should pay $3000 for a bad compressor. Glad to find this forum - now I know about this Goodwill warranty. Others have said "plead your case" - what does that mean? I hope they will cover the repairs, otherwise I lose faith in Honda and will certainly warn others who are actually planning to buy a Honda CR-V.

Honda CRV 2002, Compressor blew at 87K miles, I took it to my dealer (Executive Honda, Wallingford), got a quote of 1400 to repair, called up American Honda based on messages in this Forum.
American honda opened a case and after about 4 days they got back to me that they will cover 50% of cost and asked me to take the CRV back to Executive for repairs.

have a 2003 Honda CR-V with 69K miles on it. Two days ago as my wife and I were driving home, we heard a whistling noise followed by what sounded like gravel hitting under the firewall. I turned the AC off as it was only putting out warm air. Today the chief mechanic at my company says the clutch on the air conditioner is completely gone. I am wondering if it's just the clutch or if the compressor has seized causing the clutch to snap the bolt and fall off.

Our 2003 CRV made a loud noise last weekend and we soon learned that it was the air conditioning compressor. Took it to the dealer and explained that I'd seen a lot of this same problem mentioned on websites and forums like this one. Honda corp. paid for the parts ($800 retail) and I paid the labor ($700).
