Can an automobile be ahead of its time and yet be obsolete? As it heads into retirement, the Honda Insight certainly looks that way.

I have a 2000 Honda Insight with manual five speed transmission and air conditioning. This article claims that air conditioning was not available in 2000, but it was in Canada.... I have wondered if my vehicle could not be updated with lithium ion batteries and modified to plug-in. Honda did not choose to make these updates and discontinued the line. Was it because such updates were not technologically feasible or simple because the Insight line was not profitable?

Considering the all the versions of the Insight have the same physical aspects, the AC unit can probably be installed.
Li-ion batteries have a different chemical make-up than NiMH (the current battery type). There is no manufacturer kits for Plug-in. These two things, if you want it incorporated, require personal modding of the car. the following webpage might help out. http://www.99mpg.com/ As for the discontinuing of the insight line, the reason why is the insight was a "testing the water" type car. It was meant to see how people would react to a hybrid. |
