I'll stick with my paid off seven year old Honda Civic that gets 35 mpg in all around driving.

Serves those suckers right. No one should buy any GM car after what they did. In Spain I drive a 2002 Peugeot 406 1.8 litre HDI diesel that gets 40 mpg on the highway. It's roomy and comfortable, as attested by the 2,500 km trip that we just took. The technology is there, if we want to use it.

GM is a good company. and GM did not lie, because theoretically the volt is all electric in electric mode.
Peugeot is not known to the common american. French cars.......with those little diesels.

There must already be some electrocuted electric car mechanics. How many I wonder.

Hybrids and All Electric vehicles do pose new risks to mechanics...the voltage is not only higher, but the amperage as well. Volts bite...Amps kill.
I still love my 1963 Olds that my grandmother bought brand new...it has a 215 Cubic Inch all aluminum V8 with a 4 barrell carb and a 3 speed automatic. I can get 30 MPG on the highway with this as well.
If everybody just kept tires inflated correctly we would get an extra 2-3MPG average as a nation!

This is total BS. I could drive a Volt to work and back every day without ever burning a drop of gas. The Prius could barely get me out of the neighborhood before firing up.

"The Volt goes 25 to 50 miles on electric drive before a gasoline engine starts charging the battery. By comparison, Toyota's plug-in Prius travels about 15 miles on battery power before its gasoline engine engages. It is certified by California as the cleanest type of rechargeable hybrid, Keddie said."
In California, you have many freeways, which are running up to 80MPH. When running down the road at the speed limit of 65 to 70, the Volt may not last but 15 miles either. Consider that the battery pack is 16KWh, but only charged to 12KWh to make the warrantee period of 10 years. Then it can only be discharged to 4KWh before the generator kicks in. That 8KWh of all electric is equavalent to about a quart of gasoline, in a 500 pound battery pack. GM would have been better served by using one of their Euro diesel engines to run the genset and tune it for peak performance. You could then go head to head with the Prius as a plug in hybrid with much more range and efficiency. But ,Nooooooooooooo!!!
