Join the club I have a 2000 Astro an has had the fuel injectors replaced 2x, fuel pump replaced, alternator replaced. Now the heater does not work, unless I am on the freeway going 80 mph the hot air will come out. The overhead dome lights have the override button on, so that when I drive they are not flashing on/off. Know there is a drip of oil coming off the front end, which turns out to be oil cooling hose. When driving in a windy area it is noisy as if the windows were cracked open. And this is only my weekend family car, so I don't really use it daily. Lets say I will never buy Chevy again, learned my lesson. No wonder imports are so much better.

a friend of mine had an astro it went to 216000 miles with little problems. not a great ride, definitely not luxurious, but it did its job.

My GMC Safari was prety fine except for the tranny I wore out at 80K. Then something weird was making noises in the rear and we could not pin point what it was. We had the AWD version.
The engine was great for the entire time we owned it. Not a bit of engine trouble in 105,00 miles. |

I had a 1999 Astro Van. 190,000 miles. I had planned on driving it at least 250,000. It burned when my garage cought on fire. Really hated to see it go. NEVER any major trouble. Still had the original plugs, wires and radiator on it. Had 1 alternator and 1 battery put on it. Jim from Texas |

Who knew about all the troubles! I drive a 96 Safari I've had it for about a year and six months and here it goes... A/C is now gone, dome lights do act up, had the fuel pump replaced along with all the injectors. it has killed 1 battery and the factory kill switch had to be removed because it caused a few electrical problems. After seeing all the troubles I'm a bit scared to continue driving it.

I am on my fourth Chevy Astro (yes 4 of them). We have had little issue with them (95, 01, 04, 05 - still running the 04 and 05).
Issues: fuel pump, one plugged injector (stuff got through the fuel filter), lost A/C clutch at 120,000. I kept us all the maintenance, did the tranny fluids at the lower intervals (30K each change). We really like them and are sad they are no longer being made. They are great for towing and offer more head room, like a full size van, without being a full size van. |

We had two Astro's. One was an '89 and my mechanic nicknamed it Christine after the Stephen King novel about a possessed car. We bought a '93 and it was great. When they get old they need a lot of work, but if you get one that has been taken care of they're serious workhorses. Replaced it with a Caravan which I hate. No leg room, no room for anything and always in the shop.

I have a '99 Safari rwd. I just had the ring and pinion replaced and about 1,000 miles later it has started making a scrape,scrape,scrape noise when moving. It increases relative to speed but does not change when the brakes are applied. I have heard that it could be a build-up of brake dust in the drums. Seems to be coming from the drivers side. Any clues?

I have had 4 Safari's, all were 2WD, probably have put over 300 000 miles on them with very little problem. they never let me stranded. As they get older expect problems with doors, handles, switches. I like the power and ride and handling (NOTE: 2WD) My current is 1997 with 275 000 Km approx 190 000 miles and runs good. If you like mini Vans can't go wrong in my opinion.

I have 99 Saffari, I have been running it on empty for some time with the price of gas...But now she wont start...put my ear to gas tank but cant here fuel pump...I am pretty sure this the problem...but not sure...could it be anything else? like fuel filter or injectors? Ive checked the fuel rely its fine...I heard that the fuel pump needs fuel to be running over it to cool it down is this true?
|
||||
Sorry, we cannot help you, this is a Chrysler forum. |

Yes, its true. You should always keep at least a quarter tank of gas (though experts say half tank) to make sure the fuel pump cools down and operates properly, regardless what make vehicle it is. Your local dealership should be able to confirm.

Chrysler is making Astros now?

I thought it was already dropped.

After having the ring and pinion replaced we had a noise which seemed to be coming from the right rear bearing. After much work and time it turned out that the pinion bearing needed to be tightened a little more.
