I had a '91 metro. My friends called it a 'Pregnant roller skate' But man I could go to school and work and hang at the mall all for $10 every two weeks. Those were the days.

Ha! I used to have one of these...until I rolled it...oops. I hated that car, but then again I was 16...at that age any car is better than none. The gas mileage was great and I never had any problems with it. Well, until the crash. No injures either!!:)

By 2010 gas prices should be back down. Sure we haven't built any new refineries in 30 years but those we have are expanding even more so e.g. Sinclare here in Tulsa. Saudi Arabia is working on making more refineries to export pure gas to the US.
The biggest problem is the US Dollar. In 2001 80 US cents bought 1 Euro now it takes 1,58 US dollars to buy one Euro. That is nearly double! I'd rather not get into a political debate with anyone but regardless... Whom ever is the next president has a huge mess to clean up and put us back on track to a stable growing economy.
Oil is priced in dollars, most of our oil comes from countries that couldn't care how much it costs *gas is about 60 cents a gallon in Saudi Arabia* but they care how much "stuff" they can buy with our dollar. Until the dollar is fixed it's going to remain higher than it should.
Think about it like this...
Bob use to have 2 million bucks in his bank account, plus his company was running well so he people want to buy stock in his company and it's sold at a premium. In 7 years he goes from having 2 million bucks to 9 million in the hole, his costs have double and tripled because of poor decisions, he's having to lay out ungodly expenses for a project he thought was good but it's clear it's costing more than it could ever save, the land his factory sits on has fallen in value, his employees are going broke and can't afford to get to work or eat... How much do you think his stock is worth compared to when he still had money and wasn't spending it like it was going out of style.
That's what investors see in our country with our dollar.

Lmao... My older cousin used to have one & we had a blast in it. We called it a baby gremlin! We used to cruise town & pull the e-brake as we were coming up to a stop sign, it was the most hilarious thing ever! I have to agree with some of the others, I dont think the thing was safe at all! I always felt like I was in a go cart! Its funny that this story is on here cause just the other day another older cousin of mine was in his big four door lifted Z71 chevy driving down the road & had a seizure, he veers off & hits an old metro & plows through a small building!! Needless to say the metro didnt win, the Metro was almost cut in half! Thankfully he wasnt hurt & thank the Lord that no one was in the Metro!

I had one 10 yrs ago, good car, I didnt buy it to have a wreck in. It wouldnt fair well in a accident. But I bought it for the gas mileage, PERIOD. Wish I had it today. My question is, why can't any of the car makers now get close to 50 MPG? When this car did it 10+ yrs ago.

I don't think I would purchase a GEO Metro with 150k miles on it anyway. The gas mileage was great but the car was a death trap. Just my experience. NPR says gas is going to get up to $8-$10 a gallon. Soon we'll be riding bicycles with lawn carts attached to them to carry our groceries and purchases. We'll have to start working from home because we can't afford to drive to work. Public transportation in Tulsa isn't 24/7. Makes it bad if you work 2nd or 3rd shift!

I have an '01 Metro that gets about 38-45 miles per gallon. It's small, red, and for sale for $2,500.00. Did I mention that it only has 83,000 original miles?

I am changing to a job in my town for paying less money but buying less gas.I calculated to see where I would come out better with more money and it would be better if I worked in my town than to drive in TUlsa. TUBBLES! you could not FIT in a metro dont lie

Ah, this story brings laughter to my heart...
When I was almost 16, I kept asking my dad what kind of car he was going to get me... You know that is an exciting time in your teenage life... Anyway, he'd look at me so lovingly and say "Dee, I've thought about it, and I've decided I'm going to get you a Geo Metro. That way, when you get in a car wreck, there won't be much left of ya"...
Oh- I love you, and your natural ability to deliver classic one-liners, Dad... Hope your having a great day!

Been driving a friend's '89 Metro for a coupla weeks. Great legroom - I'm 6'-1" Rather worn but runs good, starts as quick as I can turn the key and let off. I know what you mean by not wanting to go over 50. Even a VW Beetle looks intimidating. And the TRUCKS!! I look to the side and I'm looking at the truck's wheel hub. Any time I spot a truck coming up behind, I look for a place to dodge off the road. A Peterbilt'd run right over this teeny beer can. Even motor scooters look big from down here.

Thing'd go 80+ mph. 850 cc (51 ci) 2 cyl HO engine w/roller cam, roller crank, herringbone timing gears, hydraulic valve lash takeup (no clicking noise from the tappets), 1 pc. cylinder heads & barrels (no head gaskets). Air cooled, no radiator. Much larger car than the Metro, pretty good size trunk, 15" wheels. Roomy - Seated 5-6 if they weren't all big, flat floor. Like all '50s cars, a deathtrap in a crash. Wonder what the Panhard engine could do with modern fuel injection, & ignition, piston design?
