I have a 2003 Mercury Sable and its been great up till yesterday. The same thing as you folks are experiencing. Stopped at the 4 way, took a left and immediatly felt like the car was in Neutral.
She's got 130,000 on her but no prior transmission pproblems whatsoever. I hope it's just a broken cable

My 2003 Taurus SEL with 74000 miles just had the same problem. Traffic light turned green, and half way through the left turn, lost all power to the drive train. Still, Park seemed to work, but none of the other gears. No warning lights or anything. Interesting that many other posts on this issue also report making a left turn when the power cuts out. Also, was the first morning of the year when the outdoor temp was at 32 degrees F - could that be a factor?
Had it towed to the dealer where they are now saying its possibly the torque converter or transmission pump(they apparently won't know for sure until they tear it all apart!?!). Already charged me $200 to diagnose. Looking at $2500 for full fix. Luckily I bought the extended warranty and am still under it by 1000 miles, but they are playing the dealership games and questioning whether the problem is covered or not.
That Honda Civic hybrid keeps looking better every day!

I'm having an issue with my 2001 ford taurus. i drive for about 20 minutes. Hit stop and go traffic. When I attempt to accelerate from a stop i can get to about 20 MPH then the car feels like it kicks into neutral as the RPMs rev up with no power. I have to shift from OD to d and the tranny finally kicks into gear. I bring it to the shop and they can't replicate the issue. And say no codes are thrown. This has happened to me two mornings in a row. Any advice?

Sounds like the clutch packs are worn out and when they get hot they don't engage.
You will have to have it rebuilt otherwise it will do this everytime you hit stop and go traffic.
Something that may help it a little but just a little is putting an extra transmission cooler on it to help keep it cooler.

I have a 1998 Taurus with 115K miles and I have not had a complete transmission failure... yet. However, for a long time now, I have noticed that when the transmission is shifting in and out of first gear, is it a bit jerkier than other shifts and there is a sound that resembles what you hear if you rub a wet finger across glass. I'm curious to know how close this puppy is to death. I once had a 1985 Chevy Scottsdale pickup with the Turbo 350 transmission that developed an interesting slip and double-shift at 55K miles and I drove it to 160K w/out the problem getting any worse. This issue does not seem to get any worse either, but all I can do is hope.

arggg, I hate my car. 00 Ford T, 89,000 miles and the tranny goes. Busy interstate with a 5year old. No warnings just like everyone else. The tow bill was awful. I have had all kinds of problems with this car but never the tranny. Do any of you remember the recalled part a few years ago. My car have not been right since then...do you think the Ford Service folks tinkered with it?

Will never, ever buy another Ford. Oh, Thanks God for friends with spare cars, can't afford a new car nor can I afford to put in the Tranny.

I had and 87 Ford T that had over 200,000 miles an not a single problem with the transmission, I gave it away after buying the 00. That car is still on the road. Go figure.

My sister, 19, was driving a 2000 taurus home after dropping me off at the detroit airport, she says she was doin 75-80 and then watched her rpms increase as her speed decreased, my sister, by herself was stuck on the side of the highway in Flint michigan, not a good place for a 19 yr old girl, i purchased this car for her thinking it would be a good car for college, is it trustworthy after this? estimate is $1500, sell fords buy foreign!

If it just quits all of a sudden and was working properly without a lot of slippage between gears, then it is the valve body. Probably was anyway, but if it slipped between gears badly you should rebuild the whole transmission. The valve body is not too hard to fix, but a tranny replacement is.
Order one from a valve body company, buy a new filter and drop the pan. Ford has a defective valve body in this transmission, but they never had to recall it for some reason.

We've got a 2003 Ford Taurus SE, that's paid for.
Yesterday my wife calls and says "The car is really jerking and the RPMS are going high. It's like it won't shift?".
Damn.....
I bet I'm looking at a transmission. Part of me says to go dump it before it dies on her. We're looking at a Honda or Yota. I can't fathom how a car with 65,000 miles would die like this. We've owned it since 23,000 miles.
