Was a great car. My 1997 Ford Taurus is in the shop today having the transmission rebuilt. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Last fall it started shifting very hard into 2nd gear. I had the transmission serviced and it got better but didn't go completely away. Earlier this week at a stop sign I pulled out into traffic and the car would only go about 5 mpr. With the pedal to the floor and a semi coming it just made it across a busy street and started picking up speed. I called my mechanic and he checked it out and told me it was the transmission again. I got the phone call a couple of hours ago, they had pulled the transmission and found several 'burned' parts and a broken pump among other things. Next Tuesday I pay my $2000 and get my car back. I say get rid of the car and move on while it still runs well enough to sell it!

I own a 94 taurus that i think is starting to have problems with the kickdown solenoid but its been a great car. I cant say that im pissed that its having problems because over the years i've really kicked the $#!+ out if this car and its held up. I've been able to fix all of the problems that came my way.

Lou NJ wrote: Had a problem with my 2002 Ford Taurus a month or so ago. Took it into the mechanic but he couldn't find a problem. My car started to smoke under the hood, it was coming from just behind the engine. When I looked under the hood I could see transmission fluid everywhere. I drove it home under a mile and when I pulled in the driveway a load of trans fluid just came from? It looked as if it was boiling it that makes sense. It actully looks like it was coming from where you would check the fluid level where the dip stick is. Now after a month the trans is starting to every once in a while. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks That happens when the transmission fluid is overfilled, and yes it did come right from where you check the fluid level.

It is really complicate motions for me to see lots of people have the same transmission problems... My 2001 Taurus start having slight problems when we went to a road trip from DFW to Nashville, TN, around 78000 miles: The transmission cannot handle an accelerate too fast from a stop and made the car "Jump" every time when I try to stop from 40 to 0. The only thing I can do is pump out the ATF as much as I can and put Mobil1 full synthetic ATF into it, which cost-effective than rebuild the transmission... I feel it really getting better and consider to replace an ATF radiator for the old thin aluminum pipe because the problem only occur when my car run in the city, which causes lots of heat to ATF.

It saved my taurus.

I bought my 2002 taurus in 2006 @ 65,000 miles and am now at 129,000 miles. Recently the transmission started to slip or shudder, mostly when on the highway, in overdrive. What's interesting is I noticed it happening when the heater was on, defrost (I'm told defrost engages the A/C compressor) or normal cabin heat mode. If I turn the heater off, the transmission slip or shudder goes away. My mechanic says it's probably the lockup clutch slipping, requiring a transmission replacement. Any other taurus owners with similar issue?

Carolyn wrote: I am having similar problems with my 2002 Ford Tauras. The mileage is at 78,000. A squeaking/chirping sound developed about two weeks ago and I think it is coming from the transmission. The squeaking has gotten progressively louder and more frequent. For about the last 10,000 miles the engine revs when I come to a stop. This seems to happen after I have run errands and turned the car off and on after a few short trips. Carolyn, Does the check engine light come on? I just replaced the Camshaft Synchronizer in our 2002. The engine was making a squeaking sound and had an irratic idle, eventually the check engine light came on. Do not replace with the cheap chinese after market part (Marketed by Dorman) it will not last! Napa Auto parts has the better quality replacement part for under 70.00.
