At idle speed, my 2002 Ford Taurus 6 cyl engine has a continuous squeak or chirp coming from the drivers side top of the engine. It seems to be coming from a black disk about the size of a silver dollar located just to the left of the thermostat housing. There is also a plastic wire clip attached to it.
It is very difficult to get a good look at it since there is a large wiring harness that runs across the top of it. I would like to disconnect the wires to this disk but I am concerned it may mess up the computer. Any ideas on what it might be and if that could be the cause of the squeak? Thanks for your help

Woody, Thanks for the reply. I ran the engine with the belt off and the squeak was still there coming from the opposite side of the pulleys. It seem sto be coming from this black disk on top of the engine on the left side.

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2001 TAURUS V6. TYPE IN TAURUS SQEEK ON YAHOO. I FOUND A FORD TAURUS FORUM WHERE ANOTHER GUY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE A SENSOR UNDER A BLACK PLASTIC CAP WITH A PLUG ON IT BEHIND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. IT TELLS YOU HOW TO CHANGE IT. IM TAKING MINE TO MY MECHANIC. FOR A MINUTE I THOUGHT MY CAMSHAFT WAS GOING BAD BUT I THINK ITS JUST THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. GOOD LUCK!

I had the same problem. A squeak that sounded more like a chirp from the driver side of the vehicle. The dealership replaced the 'fuel synchonizer' and the sensor above it. The chirping stopped.

The noise when from t-stat area, under throttle body is the camshaft position sensor synchronizer. You can replace either just the synchronizer or both synchronizer and sensor. Sometimes the synchronizer will damage the sensor and it will have to be replaced.

Does anyone know about how much the repair/replacement cost?

My 2003 3.OL OHV Taurus at 105,000 miles is doing this as well. It has drove me crazy trying to figure it out, however it is getting replaced tomorrow at the Ford dealer for $300.00

My 03 Taurus has this problem as well. Does anyone know if there would be any danger/further damage if I don't get it fixed for a while? I'm not too interested in spending $300 right now

im having the same issue with the chirp, but about 2 weeks the car started stumbling around 4000 RPM but drives like new below 4k and after 4k. i was wondering if any of you are having the same issue. because it could have many different origins other than the sensor.
