Good Day, just wondering if any of you may be able to assist. I have a 2002 ford ranger 4L SOHC 5-speed Manual. Now what is happening when this first started I would start my truck and would start with a rough idle for about a half a munute and than stall, this would do this till I held in the accelerator to about 2200RPM or greater, and than I could keep the truck running. If I kept this idle high I could keep the truck running, when I drive it I have to feather the accelerator periodically to kick some fuel. Not more than a month ago I tuned it up with new plugs, wires, and even changed my coil packs. And ran fine after this until recently. Also changed my fuel and air filter. The check engine light is on and had the OBD read, by someone else since I do not own a reader, and the answer I get from the technician is that "the reading is too sporadic to tell what may be at fault". I don't think that this is a very good answer personally, but than again I am not a auto mechanic. The thing is now the truck will start and Idle, but at start up now the idle will automatically get up to 2000RPM automatically without accelorating and when I drive now power just seems to periodically cut out, you can feel the engine drag for a split second and than go back to normal. Anybody heard of this before, I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Sounds like IAC (idle air controller) gone bad. Ford is known for bad IAC: i'm on my third one. Very easy to do it yourself. It's on intake manyfold, driver side, with two bolts and connector tale. Unscrew bolts, disconnect electrical, screw it the new one, snap connector - that's it.

I have been having the same problem with rough idle. I am at 90k miles with an 03 ranger fx4, 4.0. I am changing the plugs, filters and a general tune up today as suggested by ford. I am also changing the battery as I live in the VI's and the driving is rough enough to have some chem splash which cant be very good for the copper and other engine parts. I was also plugged with a computer and was told cyl. 5 was running lean but that it could be a vacuum problem. After this post I am also going to check the IAC and hopefully it will fix the deal. Thanks for the post.
Cheers,
T

*****I was also plugged with a computer and was told cyl. 5 was running lean but that it could be a vacuum problem.*****

That could be a clogged injector. Look at the spark plug in that cylinder. It should be brownish. If it's whitish, then the injector is clogged. Don't try to clean it and don't buy into "injector cleaning" scam by automechanics. They are impossible to clean and rebuild. Get a brand new one (~50$ on the internet). They are easy to change, just unscrew intake manyfold.

My injectors got clogged at ~80K, I cleaned them in my buddy's ultrasonic under high pressure, they lasted another ~15-20K, then I got lean cyl and misfires again and had to change them. Ford's injectors got too narrow passages, very easy to get clogged, especially with all ethanol they put in gas these days.

Catch up with the chores today, especially if you've got a long list of them and you want to get through them all before Christmas. You're feeling nicely efficient without wanting to work yourself into the ground, so carry on at a steady pace. A few well-chosen words in a certain person's ear will be more effective than a lengthy conversation at other times.
