Your starter would be connected to your transmission(the starter has to turn your tranny in order to start).

Im having problems with my 86 ford ranger 2.3 L 4 cyl. Every time i go to crank it over the starter clicks once and then doesnt even do anything there after. I looked down to the starter and it was rusted beyond belief.

The starter may be the wrong one or your starter isnt matched up with the flywheel the way it should be. Take the starter back into and advanced auto parts and tell them all about the truck. 2.0 or 2.3 liter motor. Check to see if you got the right one.

I'm having the same problem, i haven't took the starter off yet but will this after noon. I thought it was the soleniod but it tested out good. I never thought about it rusting but thanks for that info

1986 Ford Bronco II, 2.9 ltr V-6

Replaced the starter, solenoid, as original. Starter turns the engine over and keeps on cranking. Can turn the key off, take it out of the switch. The engine shuts off, but the starter keeps turning over.

Any suggestions ?

I have an 87 ford arnger and i have tested the starter and replaced the relay and got the starter tested and charged the battery up full and it is a new battery. no corrosion andall the truck does when turn the key is the relay clicks alot. when you try to by pass the relay with a screw driver it don't do anything not even a spark. but when u hook it up to a jump car the engine does quarter turns or have turns that is it. any suggstions all the wires are in tact and no breaks and the fuse lines the fuse part got removed. so they are directly hooked to the relay. i am lost what to do next to get it started.

The Flywheel is tearing up your starters, replace it and problem solved, except they have to pull the tranny to get to it....labor

Most likely the starter has the wrong starter drive on it. There are 9 tooth and 10 tooth starter drives. Count the teeth. Most likely you need a 10 tooth drive. It is a common issue on those trucks.

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger and it caught fire at the rear of the transmission. I turned off the ignition and pulled the key out. The vehicle kept trying to start itself, and the head lights came on. Can you tell me what caused that?
