We have a 2002 Explorer Eddie Bauer. The O/D switching off and the "Check Transmission" light coming on has been an issue since forever and we are now over 110,000 since we bought it new. Once someone suggested it was an electrical malfunction, but now it has started to do it every trip and, as is suggested above, it struggles to change gear when accelerating from standing. There are lots of messageboard comments on the net. Is there a consumers organization or TV news station that would take up the matter?

I have a 2003 explorer with 146000 miles, and the EXACT same problem. The O/D Off light flashes constantly, and it struggles to shift gears when driving after coming to a stop....

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

I talked to the guy at our local Ford dealer the other day and, at first, he denied knowledge of a problem of this sort. Then he said that his recommendation was that whenever it became such a problem that I couldn't stand it any more, to go for a reconditioned replacement transmission which would have a guarantee, rather than a rebuild. I asked him why I would spend $3,000 on a vehicle worth not much more than twice that?

I have a 2007 Ford Expedition. The transmission started acting up 50,000 miles. The dealership took the transmission apart and said the seals were bad. I just got it back from the dealership and when I would fill it up the tank would show only 1/2 full. Then 2 days later the O/D light came on. Are these related to the transmission?

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer that I bought brand new, it now has 135,553 miles on it. Have never had problems and it actually drives very well, but the O/D Off light started flashing. Took it to the Ford dealer on Monday, was told the torque converter needed to be replaced and my Explorer would be ready Tuesday. Of course end of next day was told the new torque converter was not working properly but was assured everything would be ready Wednesday afternoon. Everyday it's a different reason why it's still not ready. By Friday I was told that the torque had been replaced twice but that now the PCM needed to be replaced for an additional $1,225.00 on top of the $1,325.00 for the torque converter. But that they would do the PCM installation free of charge and since the PCM had to be ordered from Detroit, my Explorer won't be ready for another week! My Explorer was perfectly fine, except for the flashing light. Now I don't know what to do. Any relation between the torque converter and the PCM? Or they're just taking me for a ride?

I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer Explorer with 145,000 miles. Today, it seemed to hesitate at 35 mph then kicked in and the O/D light started flashing and check transmission light came on. It is upsetting to see that this is a very common problem. I'd like to see Ford fix these cars also.

same problem with my 2001 ford explorer 140,000 miles. the transmission shifts hard from 2nd or 3rd gear. the O/D Off light will blink sometimes and I have to pull over and turn off the engine and restart to make it stop flashing and come out of O/D Off. it started after i filled my gas tank up with 87 octane, which i think was substandard. my check engine light is steadily on and 4WD light flashes also.

I have a 2003 Ford explorer, only has 57,000 miles on it and it started having trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and having the O/D light flashing today. Took it to the dealership to get it worked on, we'll see how much it's going to cost me.
