Does anyone have experience or can estimate expected cost to have the ball joints (front only) replaced on an AWD 1998 Ford Explorer by a dealer or independent garage?

I just had my '98 AWD at a local Ford dealer for unrelated work and was told my ball joints are shot and was given an estimate of $575 for replacement and $99 for alignment. This seemed outrageous to me so I am looking elsewhere. Sorry can't be of more help.

Best of luck,
Eric

I had the ball joints replaced 3 times on my 1997 AWD, 2 under extended warrenty and one that I payed for (very expensive, more than $600). The factory joints are sealed so they cannot be greased. The last set I had installed, the ones I had to pay for, came with grease fittings. I drove this one to 130k and traded it for a 2002 with bigger problems.

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. I was told by my Ford dealer that both of my front ball joints are bad. They also said that they could not replace only the ball joints but they had to replace both upper control arms as well. The price for these repairs,$877 with front end alignment. Is this an outrageous price for this type of repair?

Changed the lowers in my '95. Tapped them out with a hammer, pressed the new ones in with a pipe fitting and jack. For uppers you replace the control arms. Three bolts. Cost me about $140. each. (Two years ago)

Seems to be a problem with Ford parts. Most Explorer owners have this problem. The dealer makes a killing if you let them do it. The dealership wants to replace mine again for the second time after 40k miles. I told them if there parts are only going to last this long I wouldn't be letting them do the work.

I just got my 98 explorer inspected and needed to replace the front two ball joints. They charged me 490 including the 60 cost of inspection and emissions charge. Is this too much??? Could I have gotten a better dearl somewhere else?

you think those prices are high. Lithia Ford (Tri-Cities,WA) is wanting to charge $1500. to replace the ball joint on a 2003 Excursion and $370. to re-surface the rotars, plus an $85. diagnostic fee. Les Schwab quoted me $74. to re-surface the rotars and a free diagnostic. We will not be having any Ford dealer, especially Lithia Ford do any work on our vehicles any longer. Any one in Tri-Cities looking to purchase a Ford vehicle, I would strongly urge you to avoid Lithia Ford. This is not the first time we have had issues with them, but will be the last.

If you ever have ANYTHING done from the dealer then expect to get a good ripping. A reasonable cost for front upper & lower ball joint replacement is roughly $400 for the parts & a typical shop rate is around $60/ hour. Would most likely take 4-5 hours to do. So expect around a $700 bill total.

Local shop said labor is $136 plus cost of ball joint or lower control arm. Ball joint is about $60 and control arm about $130, control arm includes balljoint.

I just had one ball joint replaced on the front of my 99 subaru forrester (it was cracked) and it only cost $121. Parts and labor. That from a very honest mechanic.

I have a 99 chevy blazer that just failed inspection because the lower ball joints need to be replaced. I'm hearing this can cost around $500-$600. Is it worth it to get fixed on an 8 year old vehicle or should I just trade it in with a rejected sticker?

Confused in Worchester, MA. From what I hear the lowers arent such a hassle. But i would get them done as soon as possible. Probably not worth getting rid of your vehicle over...unless your vehicle is in very poor shape otherwise.

I have a 1996 Dodge Intrepid with 127k. Will probably start working on ball joint tomorrow as the local mechanic at Detroit, quoted me $800-$900 which is way too much to pay for a car which is worth ( kbb.com ) some $1500. Rip Off...

If the ball joints fail while driving, it would be dangerous as you would lose control of the vehicle. I'm replacing mine this weekend on a 97 Explorer. Lowers and uppers(which come with the control arms) are going to run me about $250 from Autozone.
