My mothers had the same problem with the same make and model and I changed the transmission filter and fluid and all problems went away, I hope that helps

same problem with my 2001 ford explorer 140,000 miles. the transmission shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. the O/D Off light will blink sometimes and I have to pull over and turn off the engine and restart to make it stop flashing and come out of O/D Off. it started after i filled my gas tank up with 87 octane, which i think was substandard. my check engine light is steadily on and 4WD light flashes also. Hoping that an oil change and quality gasoline will be the fix.

with my 97 Ford Eddie Bower. I was mashing the gas and somehow the breaks got stuck. I was doing about 40 mph when this happened and to try and save myself I turned (doing 40 mph!) and then turned again into a neighborhood to get off the main road. When I did this I crashed into and over a median and almost hit a truck but barely swerved and came to a halt in the grass - my driver's side rim/wheel had shattered (broken into pieces). What's wierd is that the car is was stuck in acceleration. Even after turning off the ignition and turning it back on, it's in full-acceleration - like when someone is revving up their engine. As soon as you start the car the engine is full blast! vrooom! and stays that way. I tried moving the car (pushing it in neutral) but it won't move. The wheel alignment must be so bad that it can't move. Also, the breaks still seem stuck, I treid pushing down the pedal and it was very stiff (like when I was on the road). Trust me - if you've ever been in this kind of situation, the Emergency Break is the LAST thing that crosses your mind when you're about to crash. Especially if you drive an automatic and hardly ever use it. Anyway, I want to know how I can fix the acceleration/break problem, and then maybe I can go from there. First thing is to get the engine out of "full-speed" mode. Like I said, as soon as you turn on the car, the engine is going full speed, as if the car is going really fast, except it's not moving. Any ideas?

i've had that problem on a couple vehicles now. my problem was fairly simple...switched out vehicle speed sensor. you may want to check wiring to the sensor, if old the insulation on the wires may be cracked off and allowing wires to ground against metal or both wires to the sensor may be touching. alot of ford's wiring is too close to heat sources and often allows the insulation on wires to get baked, causing the insulation to break apart and fall off. if it's me, i check all the wiring on the vehicle to be sure wiring issues aren't the problem. most wire insulation baking occurs in the engine compartment and near exhaust system and transmission and radiator.
. As with the sluggish idle and engine light it could be the idle air control valve. My truck has 230000 miles and was doing the same as yours after I cleaned the iac valve the engine light shut off and the idle went back back where it was supposed to be

I just found out why my 01 explorer sport track o/d lite was blinking. Same issue. All of a sudden my check Eng. Lite came on,o/d was flashing and truck wouldn't shift right. Fluid was fine not burnt or low. I decided to crawl under and check out the wires after reading an earlier post about shorted wires. Well the wires were all ok till I noticed a blue square plug connector half hanging out of the side of trans. Located on drivers side of trans. You wouldn't believe, I plugged it back in started the truck and lite went off. All ok and back to normal. Disconnect the battery and wait 5 mins and the check Eng. Lite went out. Hope this works for someone before the mechanic finds it and takes you for a ride on a new tranny. Truck just turned 142,000.

Last May, when I was traveling from home to Juarez city the o/d light started to flash, then I felt a very hard hit from the back of the explorer (like if some one was pushing me with a big bus), then nothing, like if the trans was in Neutral.(not good to have a useless car in the middle of Juarez city these days), but luckly thanks to God, the explorer stopped in front of a Tranny shop, it turned out to be the transfer case.(completely trashed in the inside)After the replacement (mine is 96, we found a 99 almost the same, he did a small change. Hey we are Mexicans!!). After that the o/d light flashing stopped. Is till have an issue with the 4X4 because looks like the little electrical motor was damaged too, but without 4X4 it works fine.

BEFORE YOU REPLACE ANYTHING UNPLUG THE WIRES AT THE TRANSMISSION AND SPRAY THE CONNECTIONS ON BOTH SIDES WITH A CORROSION CLEANER. I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM A YEAR AGO AND THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM.

theres several problems that will cause this one is a broken band in the transmission pull the pan and check where the band adjustment is if there lots of slop in the band its broke next is a solenoid pack its the black box on the drivers side of the trans its inside the pan next is servo pin bores the case is made of aluminum and the servo is steel the servo from moving in and out of the case inlarges the hole then it loses pressure u have to pull the trans out to install bushings in the case and the last is a torque converter and torque converter seal.

Had similar problem with F150. Engine seemed to always be in full speed mode. Cruise control was stuck. Unplugged the cruise control and the engine was back to normal speed mode. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem on my 2000 ford expedition, O/D flashing, shifting weird, all you have to do is to get the solenoid body replaced, plan on spending $360.00
Here are the steps:

1- Turn your engine off and disconnect the battery.
2-Drain the transmission
3-Remove the transmission pan (remove all 20 bolts)
4-Now you can see the solenoid body with an orange plastic cover
5-Remove the plug before removing that solenoid body, the plug is on the top of the transmission
6-Remove all solenoid body screws
7-Now go head and pull that solenoid body
8-Replace it with a new one ( get one from the dealership for $359.00
9-Change the filter
10-Put that pan back
11- Fill the transmission fluid from the dip stick (you would probably need 1 1/2 gallon of fluid)
12-Start the engine, double check the fluid level
13- Clear the OBD-2 codes, some autozones stores will let you use the diagnostics tool
now you are good to go just make sure your fluid level is right.
