My 2002 Durango lost oil pressure and then stopped running. The dealer showed me the slugde under the valve cover. Then asked me to produce records of service to prove I have taken care of the vehicle. I only have three invoices showning oil and filter changes. I have not kept any receipts when I bought the oil and filters and I know there has been at least 18 or 20 oil changes. There is only 73,400 miles (roughly) on the vehicle and all they can say "It must not have been maintained very well" or "A poor quality oil was used". I am not impressed by the sludge I saw under the valve cover when I know we (me and my wife) have taken pretty good care of it. Is any body out there having a similar problem? And can anyone tell me what the owners manual says about how many miles between oil changes?

Check out the Consumeraffairs.com site It seems that the sludge build up is an issue with a lot of the Durangos and Dodge knows it has a problem. I had a 99 that was given an oil change every 3 to 4 weeks due to a lot of highway miles i put on for a full year. Sludge was a problem from the several times the mechanic showed me the drained oil. He said he couldn't believe the oil was changed that often if he hadn't been the one doing it.
I did end up with 185,000 miles on it before some ass broke into it and destroyed the interior. If I hadn't had the oil changed so often I don't know if it would have made it that far.

I had the very same problems with my 2002 4.7L engine. But I have every reciept for every oil change.
I set the dealer up and went in to another dodge dealer down the street that I had never been to. I told them I had lifter noise. They showed me the sludge under the valve cover just as they did you. MY trick was when they said it was not maintained very well. When in fact it was maintained by the other dodge dealer right up the street.
I produced oil change records for every 3000 miles and used the oil they reccommended. It turns out that the problem is a low pressure oil sump pump from the pan. They will not recall on this issue due to the expense.
I pushed and got mine done under warranty and they had to install new hydrolic lifters as well becuase they were gummed up. There are a lot of 1999 ro 2002 4.7L owner going thru the very same things and they should band togteher for a class action suit against Dodge on this issue. I now use noting but Mobil One or Quaker State synthetic oils. They leave no sludge.
If you find you cannot get them to repair it. Here is a good solution.
Go to Advance Auto parts and get "SeaFoam" additive.
Before your very next oil change. Pour one can in your engine oil and run for about an hour on idle.
This will loosen up an sludge on the internal engine parts.
Drive (very slowly) to the oil change place and have them do a complete oil and lube. Record the mileage and after this use only Synthetic oils!! SeaFoam is a great cleaner for both fuel and lubrication systems. I use the very same thing in my boat as well. It's been around for years and work very well. If you cannot find SeaFoam there is one other product called "Risoline" pronounced "Riz-o-lean" This is also added to the oil. but DO NOT DRIVE AFTER ADDING THIS PRODUCT AT ALL!!!!! This is a cleaner that thins down the oil. If you drive on it it will damage your rings and vavles. You can ONLY add it and then IDLE you truck in PLACE. Then draing the old oil.
Hope this helps out.

I was thinking about adding an electric fan to my 2002 4.7 to replace the clutch style has any body else done this? Also I would like to move the ridiculously located oil filter to a more convenient location I would appreciate any suggestions.

My Engine blew up due to no oil pressure after having the timing replaced. I was told due to lack of oil changes that there was a sludge build up. My oil had been changed a couple days before I took it to have a timing. Not an acceptable answer!

My airconditioning only works on the high fan speed. It then shuts off until you turn the fan back to the high speed.

In October of 2002 I bought a Dodge Durango from this dealership as the 2003s were already out. Since owning the vehicle, I took it in for an AC recharge. Three days later, the AC once again was not functioning. I brought the 2002 Dodge Durango back and they told me the AC compressor needed to be replaced. When I asked them why I was not told this when they just charged me $85.00 to recharge the AC, their only reply was that the new compressor would cost me $700.00 and then another recharge at $85.00. Needless to say, I did not have them do the work.
Now the 2002 Durango has a blown engine because of a failing oil pump.
I paid more than $35,000 for this vehicle and it is fully paid for. I now have another $5,000.00 or more to pay for a new engine and oil pump and find many complaints about the sludge oil pump problem on the Internet from 2000 Durangos through 2002. So dealerships are aware of this problem yet fail to fix them being they occur at around 65K miles or more.

My engine light came on and was due to a power failure in the power train module (I believe it is the computer system which controls the transmission). It was about $800 to repair.

My brother has a Durango that is experiencing the same oil pressure problems as many others. The pressure went to 40 and then to 0 and back. The other day it started knocking very loudly and we had to shut it down and have it towed. We don't know whether we should replace the oil pump or if it is another malfunction. Never buy a Dodge product, you will regret it.

I must agree NEVER buy a Dodge. We owned a 99 Durango that we got rid of because of oil pump problems never being resolved. Wouldn't listen to my husband and bought a brand new 2002 Durango. The air conditioner has never cooled like it was supposed, although according to the dealer there is nothing wrong with it. And now it is broke down with the same oil pressure problems as we had with the 99. The oil has always been maintained...so I wonder what they will blame it on this time. I will never buy another Dodge product. Regardless how many people complain about the same problems....they are never going to do anything about it. They are the worst for claiming you don't maintain the vehicle properly!
