Have a 1997 chevy truck. The speedometer and tachometer drop to zero while driving. At the same time O/D and first gear become inoperative. Transmission won't downshift when accelerating. Some days, it doesn't give me any greif, while other days... well you get the pic. Any Ideas?

I am having the same problems with the same model. It sounds like we both need an ignition switch starter cable. Believe it or not I found this item on ebay for $ 84.00. I have not order it yet.

I have a 96 Blazer 4WD 4.2 vortec..ect. My problem is that when I step on the Gas I hear the really high revving, not from the engin but what sounds like the transmission. I could be wrong but the revving sound almost high pitched.. any suggestions?

My Family, including my dad, mom and myself now have a total of 3 operable chevy blazers all 96's. One needs and engine, the other a rear end, and the last one is in perfect condition...

Check the speed sensor ring in the tailshaft of the tranny. Make sure it is positioned directly on front of the Vehicle Speed Sensor Hole. I have seen the ring crack and slide back 2 inches or more on several vehicles, and they all have identical symptons.
Any more questions you can e-mail me @ carguy99@comcast.net

I just went through a similar problem with a '95 Chevy full-size truck. Lost my tachometer, realized a notable "slam" into gear when going from park into drive, and was stuck with 2nd or 3rd gear, wouldn't shift, overdrive gone. Then I lost my speedometer also.

I googled for a solution, and I can say the ignition switch cable solved it. I took mine apart and found out there is a nylon cam inside (which turns when the key does) and comes in contact with a LOT of springed contacts. I assume the cam wears out over time, thus the problem.

I was gambling on trusting the internet sources, but it saved a lot of headaches this time.

I have a 98 4wd 4.3 vortec. I'm hearing a loud "hum" when driving, and occasionally around 60mph, when I put the pedal down I don't get any accelleration. I've checked all the basics..transmission fluid, fuel filter, air filter..etc. Any thoughts?
The other facter is I moved to a higher altitude recently..does the engine and computer system need a tune for the altitude change?

I have a 96 suburban that I have had the tranny re-built in Dec. 06. It was never working correctly since then. I have taken it back to the mechanic and it has burned out on him 5 times now. He is thinking that it may be the computer by the fender well. Any suggestions anybody. After the re-built it never seems to gear into 2nd and 3rd gear. Overdrive was also out.

IS THE TRANNY FLUID LEVEL OKAY? Does the fluid on the dipstick smell burnt and brownish in color? If the fluid is clear red and doesn't smell burnt, and the tranny doesn't make strange noises, then it might be a minor problem. These transmissions are electronic so you'll have to go to a transmission specialist to find out if it's an electrical problem - like a faulty module or computer problem or a mechanical problem like a broken shift cable/linkage or a clogged filter. If the pump or torque converter have failed then both the tranny and transfer case have to be removed and now it starts to get expensive. You'll have to decide weather it's worth rebuilding or buying a used unit from a scrap yard. If your vehicle has high milage and has seen better days then maybe it's time to scrap it or sell it for parts.
