First.........I love my Tahoe
Problem...It is hard to turn to the right when turning from a stop - as though there is no power steering....no problem if I am rolling. Is there a separate pump for each side? I haven't had a chance to take it to a mechanic yet. My husband died in July and I had to get a new vehicle, and after being married to a Chevy man for 41 years....I had to get a Chevy. He was our mechanic, so we never had a car/truck in the shop, he fixed everything. My daughter learned so much from him, that she has taken up a lot of the slack.....but this one has her stumped. Any suggestions?? |

I have a 2002 Yukon SLT and I have had the same problems. The dealer applied the clunking shaft fix and then forgot to reconnect the SRS. After a year of this I fixed it myself, however the turning problem still exists. They suggested the gear box but at $350 plus I am not ready for that guess just yet.

I have the same problem with my 2004 Yukon. Did you ever get a reply?

I have a 2003 Tahoe & when pressing the breaks to turn right, it's as if there's power steering problems.. but when pressing the gas.. it let's loose.. A diag. computer check has already been tried & were told the machine can't get a reading because the check engine light has to come on to provide code readings. If that check engine light doesn't come on, the reading will indicate there's nothing wrong with the truck. I called the Chevy dealership & they'll run a test $250. that will reload the computer reading & fix whatever the problem. Of course, this is way more than the $30-$80 diagnosic check.

I have the same problem turning right from a stop or low speed. Did you find out how to solve this? |

I have the same problem truning right with my 2004 Tahoe. Like no power steering, only from a stop or backing up or low speed.
How do I fix this? |
||||
I have a 2003 Tahoe which has the same issue. We've had two power steering pumps installed and the situation has not been corrected. GM service bulletin #05-02-32-008B states that this is a normal operating characteristic. This is absurd, and this issue is a major safety concern. Did you ever get a reply that led you to a resolution? |

Your intermediate steering shaft needs to be re-lubricated. Usually you can convince the dealer to pay for the repair even if the truck is out of warranty due to the fact that this is a well known GM problem. If you do need to pay for it, the repair should not cost more the $100. I have a 2003 Tahoe and 2004 Silverado. The Tahoe has been done twice and the Siverado once. The steering on your truck will feel brand new after this simple repair. |

I had the same problem on mt 2004 truck...the dealer said it was normal and the reason was that the steering and brakes operate on a single system which starves the steering when you apply brakes at a low speed. I did not take no for an answer and filed a suit with the BBB, they found in my favor and ordered chevy to buy my truck back for sticker price. |

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my 2002 Yukon. I got charged $1100 for replacing the pump and gearbox. Still doesn't work. Been in the shop 6 times since June. I picked it up today...they had it 2 full weeks...and they said they changed a valve although I was told they were going to install the larger gearbox. What they did was crank the idle WAY up (the Yukon goes from 0-25 MPH without touching the pedal). The Service Engine Light came on while I was showing the service manager the idle. I'm bringing it back tomorrow to have them fix that. But my P/S is still a problem. Please provide me any details and guidance that you can. THANK YOU....cogdell4@comcast.net |

After reading the postings, tell me anyone if I have this right...First let me start be saying, when I turn left from a stop or say into a parking stall, my wheel feels like the power steering has gone out. I have even hit another car while pulling into a parking space...I have contacted my dealership numerous times. Seems to me ever since they replaced the recalled steering issue this problem has started. SO the problems is the intermediate steering shaft needs to be re-lubricated and the problem will be solved? I bought the life time warrenty, will this issue be covered?
Thanks for any information. |

I have a 2002 Tahoe with a lot of the same problems I read everyone else has. I had the steering wheel clunk which was the intermediate shaft that was replaced once when I bought the SUV used and once by me. The part will cost you around a $100 dollars. I had a lot of wandering in the steering while driving it so I replaced both the idler and the pitman arms. The problem went away for a while now it's back. Now I have the burnt power steering fluid and the groans when it turns at low speed. Fortunately I can fixe everything myself. One thing to point out, I have 20 inch wheels on my SUV. They are a large contributing factor in front end suspension wear and tear. I would suggest putting stock wheels back on to all of you who experience these sort of issues. Good luck to all. I do love my Tahoe as it is a nice vehicle with the exception of the steering issues.

I have an 01 tahoe. I just replaced the power steering pump. But it whined really bad, it sounded like the bearing was bad on the pump. So I took it back and got a new one, and it does the exact same thing. Its quiet until you hit 1500 rpms. I bleed it out according to the manual, could it be possible I got 2 bad pumps, or am I doing something wrong?

My 01 Tahoe has the same problem, as if there is no power steering only when turning right at low speeds. This is my wife's car and i am very concerned with how hard it is to turn in parking lots, i have trouble at 215 pounds. I am going to replace the intermediate steering shaft first because it is only a $94 part as opposed to the much more expensive alternatives, none of which are guaranteed to work from what i have gathered. I will keep you all posted on my failure or success.

Well my 01 Tahoe is now equipped with the new and improved GM intermediate steering shaft, but my steering is not improved. I am as unsure of my next move to fix my steering problem as i now am of GM products.

I have spoken with a GM technician and he says that the only thing that could cause trouble in turning only one direction is the valve in the steering gear box. It is easier and less costly to replace the whole gear box instead of the valve because of the special tools required to get into gearbox and replace valve. I ordered one on carsteering.com for $320 total with S&H. I will let you know when replaced how it went.

I just bought a 2003 Yukon XL SLT, I have had these issues as well. on top of the steering issue, I hear a knocking coming from under the hood, it isn't a regular knock, only sometimes.. and it doesnt sound like its the wheel, any ideas?
