Re: Faulty speedometer in Chevy Silverado...just read on another site that if you have 4Z in your VIN, you may be eligible for a recall on this problem. Not sure why they would have targeted this particular VIN, but call 866-790-5700 to see if you're eligable.
Also and VERY IMPORTANT...EVERYONE, and I repeat EVERYONE with this problem needs to call GM at 800-222-1020 and file a complaint. They will only create a recall for this after they have received a set number of complaints. Not sure what the magic number is here, but at this point you've nothing to lose...it's a free call. |

I have a 2003 Silverado and my speedometer is pegged at 100 or so. I was told that just the part costs $300. Just the part not counting the labor. How long is it going to take to get a recall?

Dude! Pulling the IGN E fuse and attempting to start the truck reset mine! Thanks!

I have the same problem with the spedometer. It went to 120 when I picked up the truck from the dealer. They had Just had the rotors warranied and replaced and pads replaced on 2004 silverado 3500. rotors were defective in 2004 as defined by the dealer What is the problem? I have had probably 15 cars over the last 30 years and never had a spedometer fail. |

Currently there is a class action law suit in the State of CA, and Washington against GM for this issue. Hold on to all your receipts and tickets, if they win (which they should), should be reimbursed

I've had the same problem on my '03 C1500 - speedometer won't fall below 60 mph and regularly buried at 120. My guy wanted $650 for rebuilt cluster and to recalibrate. Called my dealership this morning, told them I was at 86XXX miles but heard this was a big problem. They said to bring it in and they would cover it at no charge. GM may finally be getting the message. Doesn't hurt to call.

Over 70,000 miles....sorry for your bad luck !! We found AER Technologies in Brea, California who will take your old cluster for exchange of a reconditioned one and program it while you wait (for us about 15 minutes). To get to the cluster you have to pop off the face on your dash. Just tug a little. It helps to adjust your steering column down and shift to low gear. There are four 7mm screws in the corners then unplug the cluster. The dealerships want anywhere between $375-$600 for this repair. We ended up kicking down $236.07. Hopefully Chevy will man up and reimburse us if this class action suit prevails. GOOD LUCK

I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado. About 6 moths ago the speedometer stopped working. All my other gages still work fine but the the speedopmeter reads 120mph. I tried to contact the GM dealer in town and they told me that it would be over $400.00 to replace. I only have 69,000 miles on the truck and I am the original owner. Something needs to be done about this.

I am in Fort Worth, Texas. Have a 2003 Suburban LT with just over 96,000. The sporatic speedo issue began late last year. Speedo sticks at various times and at various speed amounts. Got quotes to replace clusters from $300-$700. Odometer works just fine. |

My 2005 Silverado LT Crew Cab is having the same problem with the odometer. It pegged out way over 120mph, between 2nd and 3rd gear on gear shift indicator on April 20, 2008. That is where it has stayed. I contacted GM, they said they couldn't do anything as there is not enough complaints about the 2005's. My answer was "you know about the problems with the 03 and 04's So why is GM not covering all the trucks with this problem." NO ANSWER! GM is RIPPING OFF THEIR CUSTOMERS. I will never buy another GM product as they do not stand behind what they sell.

It isn't just the trucks this happened to my 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, it started acting crazy, than would work again. Once you hit 60mph it would stop working, now it doesn't work at all, the entire cluster is not working. I only know I need gas when the low fuel light comes on, than I have to rush to the gas station to get gas. I try not to take the car on long trips where I don't know where any gas stations are at and carry extra gas with me when I go, just in case. Just stupid!

The repair is acually quite simple it takes less than 15 minutes to do. First you need to buy stepper motor(s)(each needle is controled by one). Then you need to remove the gauge cluster.
...NOTE! NEED BASIC SOLDING SKILLS (on GM trucks and SUV's there is usually a large one piece trim pannel that goes around your dashboard and radio area, pull the trim piece off, then you have acess to the cluster. remove the 4 7mm bolts and put in a safe place. GM's have 1 or 2 plugs on the back of the cluster, unplug the cluster from the car and remove. To dismantle the cluster there are a few plastic clips on the front and some on the back. you'll need access to the circuit board, so remove the needles, gently pull them stright towards you. the stepper motors look like little white disks with a pin sticking out. turn the board upside down and locate the 4 solder in pins from the stepper motor, touch the solder gun to the four points and remove old motor, repeat the process in revese to reinstall the cluster.) NOTE!!! BE CAREFULL WHEN PULLING THE NEEDLES OFF AND PUT IN THEM ON, and make sure they are lined up on reinstall. |

My husband's 2004 Silverado HD2500 speedometer quit working the other day. Read on one of these posts to disconnect the battery cable and allow the thing to reset itself. It worked for about 5 minutes and then quit again. The dealership wants $600 to repair this. We think this is a defect in the vehicle itself, especially after reading about so many others having the same problem. The service personnel told us there is no cable, that it is all electronic. Does anyone know anything about the darn thing and another way to fix it? Please respond. Thanks.

Thanks for the link, wouldn't of thought of it myself. Add one more complaint to the list |
