what year are we talking about ? Most can be easly fix , remove dash cover, protective clear plate, and you will see the speeddometer face plate. turn needle by hand, if ti spring back to the fuul blow position then remove the 4 screws that hold in the faceplate and see if you lost your balance weight. You can get a new speedometer or one from the salvage yard, disconnect speedometer cable and replace. Just be extra gentle with the small parts.

My dad's chevy 1500 has had some problems latley. First off, one of the leaf springs broke so he had both replaced....then the heater stoped working which is not really a big deal because it's almost summer. Now the speedo is dead and the truck won't shift to 2nd.(auto) He replace the sensor thing on the transmition that tells it to shift but still it won't shift to second gear. The transmition was replace two years ago so i don't think it's the tansmition that is the problem. Any ideas on why the speedo is dead and the truck won't shift to second gear? The truck has 197,000 miles and other than that it runs good. Thanks

I have the same problem. It appears to be a loose connection, as the problem is intermeditant. Have you found any answers? It looks like it should be a recall item. Plaease contact if you have found answers, walleye1103 at yahoo.com

There is a person on ebay that fixes this problem and shows diagram on how to remove it to send to him. I have not used him yet but am seriously considering, due to the price that GM wants to charge to replace or repair.

I have a 2003 silverado with the same problem with my speedometer, found a speedometer shop in Tacoma that will do the repair for 185.00. They also give you a one year warranty, they told me it is the electronic needle movements that go bad. It took them about an hour and a half to do the repair. You can find them at tacomaspeedometer.com , good luck my speedometer works great

I haven't seen any answer about recall. My 2003 Silverado has the same speedometer problem - needle pins to 120 mph. Sometimes it works but not so much now. Is this something an average person can fix? I saw mention about needle weight and another about electronic needle movement. What is the real answer?
I assume the $500 price is to replace the entire instrument cluster at, typically high, dealer rates.

The speedometer cable gets worn due to the way that the vehicle sits. It is recommended that the front end be lifted but it can only be lifted with a special bracket that will make the truck be level. The speedometer get worn due to the way it sits. You can get a speedometer cable valued fom 35 to 75 dollars and replace it yourself. Youhave to take the dash board off that covers the speedometer, then removed the clear plat that covers the speedometer, the reomve the screws that hold the speedometer into the wall as you pull it forwar you can disengage the connect behind it. You will have to open the hood and pull the cable out of the wall, you may need to remove the rubber circle that keeps it in and disengage the cable from the transmission or engine depending on the model and year. Once this is done you cn unscrew the cable and remove it and then follow the same actions in reverse to install the new cable or you can also get a used one at a used parts store. It will work the same. This will correct your problem.

I got some updated information from my wife. It seems the speedometer works fine for a while. But if it is a hot day and she runs the A/C during the day by the end of the day the needle is no longer working. It is not only the A/C. There is something causing the speedometer not to work properly. Whether it is the speedometer cable or something in the gauge I am not sure. I would take it to the mechanic to diagnose but I don't want to do that and then find out it is a $500 repair. For now we have to live with it, I guess.

The problem with the speedometers and sometimes other gauges in 2003 and up Chevy trucks is caused by a tiny broken gear in the actual meter movement. The gear is a small piece of cylindrical metal surrounded by a plastic gear - the gear is held in place by 3 plastic ribs. One of the ribs cracks causing an offset. If you picture the gear as a childs top - when you normally spin the top it spins straight up and down. Because the rib breaks it causes the gear to be out of balance and thus the rotation then "wobbles". This causes teh gear to get stuck at various locations. GM knows of this problem. Suggest owners to complain "LOUDLY"
