Hello. I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier Z-24. Currently, the car turns over, but wont start. My boyfriend sprayed starter fluid in the air intake. And after doing that 3 times, while I turn the ignition, it finally started, and the car ran fine for miles. The next day, I started the car, and again it turns over, but won't start. Any ideas? Is it a bad fuel pump? There is also knocking noise on the left rear of the car. And the ETS and Check engine light is always on. Please help! Thank you.

you dont want any liquid in the intake. thats why it's usually covered and conceald. thats something with the transmittion sell it and get what you can. otherwise you're going to end up with a major project car.

If you want to check your fuel pump here’s a couple of ideas.

I know this sounds crazy but get a wooden ball bat or a rubber mallet and have your boyfriend get underneath the car and pound on the gas take a few times while your cranking it over, if the car starts up its definitely your fuel pump.

Another good way to tell is to take the gas cap off when the car is COLD and put your ear to it while someone turns the key on (Stop right before you engage the starter). You should hear a buzzing sound as the car primes.

Well I have a 96 cavi but I have the 2.2. I can tell you that the some other options these guys missed. One when your get the car running unplug the vacume hose from the fuel regulater. About the buzzing noise from the pump. You should be able to here it inside the car. You dont need to put your ear to the fuel cap whatsoever. Make sure your not flooding out the motor either. To me that sounds like a possability since you said it ran fine. Which means either your fuel injectors are leaking internally into the motor rather than back into the fuel tank. Best way to check for that is to pull the spark plugs and crank the motor over about 4 to 6 revolutions if you see a missed come out of the spark plug wholes you have gas in the chamber. Do this with your injectors uplugged as well so additionally fuel doesnt not spay into motor. If you have any questions feel free to email me, bdbys8@hotmail.com.

I have a 1995 cavalier and recently changed the fuel injectors. I tried starting the car but now I can't even hear the noise the fuel pump is suppose to make right before the car starts. All of the fuses are fine so I was wondering if maybe there is a way to reset the fuel pump.

My 1996 had the same symptoms. Here is what I have so far:

Two different shops said that the problem is with the ignition system (ignition cylinder, its housing, and the ignition switch). Apparently they are sending a theft signal to the computer which causes the engine to die immediately after start up.

The (reputable) mechanics at City Garage gave me the straight story but admitted that they could do nothing as it would involge proprietary equipment at a GM dealership to be able to resolve a problem involving the computer.

The Dealership told me the same story about the theft signals and said the ignition components would have to be replaced. They'd be happy to do it too, for a mere $1500. Yeh, I just bet they would.

A little research later and I discovered that there are recalls involving the ignition system ( http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ ), fuel pump, accelerator control cable, steering, rear suspension, and air bags. The recall on the ignition system states that it is a safety issue and that it could suddenly burst into flame at any time. Funny how the dealership wasn't aware of this...

So, the car is at a different dealership for the recall work and I'll post the results when I get her back.

Cheers

!!!!!! UPDATE !!!!!!
The recall ID is NHTSA: 02V070000.
I have had the car back for a week now and it has started the first time, every time. I have not seen the annoying Anti-Theft light even once.

If you choose to have your car serviced for this issue, make sure they check it out for the others I listed. According to the NHTSA, all of the issues except the fuel pump and air bags can cause loss of control and crash. The fuel pump in my car went bad and cost me more than $500 before I realized it was a recall item. And, of course, you don't want the air bags to fail if you need them.

Cheers
