ok ive got a friend with an aveo and she has somehow pushed in the lock on the driver side door. She has pushed the round silver metal piece that you insert the key into, inside the door and can no longer get her key into it.

can i just take of the door panel on the inside and access the lock? is there a way to remove the handle from the outside?

thanks for the help!

This happened to me also when I slammed the door, not by pushing on the key. On BOTH doors. The dealer fixed it and said that the setscrews that hold them in were loose or missing.

I forgot to mention that I bought the Aveo new, it is a 2005, and that is the only problem I have had with the car in 50,000 miles.

My dealer warned me they are seeing a lot of this - a plastic nut holding the locks - replacement piece is supposed to be metal that they also add some threadlocker. In theory the original parts will still be inside the door - taking apart the door isn't too tough (the door handle is a pain to remove - pull out the metal clip to remove) - and try to keep the plastic sheet clean so you can re-stick (using a heat-gun does seem to get it to re-stick).

had the same problem, simply remove interior door panel, line up the lock cylinder to the correct position, and use a quality screw to tighten in place.

Same problem on an '06 Aveo. Took it to Merit Chevrolet in Maplewood, MN and got an estimate that required ordering a new key, lock cylinder, and door handle. The total repair estimate, with the new parts and labor, was about $250.

Sounds to me like a design defect that GM should repair for free. Assuming they won't, where can I get the repair done at a more reasonable cost?

I'm not interested in taking the door apart and putting it back together. I think if I did, I might end up with more problems than simply having to lock and unlock the car from the passenger side.

My daughter just bought a 2008 Aveo. The drivers door will only lock with he key. Is this a safety device to keep you from locking your keys out or is it a malfunctioin in the lock? All the other doors lock by pushing the lock button and shutting the door.

Lets try this again...My daughter just bought a 2008 Aveo. The drivers door will only lock from the outside using the key. Is this a safety device to keep you from locking your keys in or is it a malfunction in the lock? All the other doors lock by pushing the lock button down and shutting the door

Yes it is just a safety feature to make sure you don't lock your keys in your car. On the 2007 model you also need to lock the hatch after you open it. It does not automatically lock when you close it.

I have had my Aveo since 2007 and yesterday my lock fell into the door. I am trying to figure out how to remove the door panel and get the lock back in place.

I have two Aveos (2005 and 2007) and this happened on both of them (door lock just fell into the door). Now I drive around with duck tape on both my car doors. When I ran my web search, I was expecting to find more postings about a defect acknowledged by the manufacturer and the dealers being required to fix it at no charge. Instead I'm seeing all these recommendations about the consumer having to remove the door panel and fix it themselves! If all of these cars are having this problem, the consumers need to stand up and hold the manufacturer accountable. Also, its interesting that I'm seeing the problem being posted for a number of different model years. This tells me the problem is simply being ignored.

This might help get some of you get started--

It sounds like this would be a pretty easy fix, removing the panel will probably be the toughest part of the job.

I cant believe here's another posting telling the consumer to take off the door panel and fix it themself. If GM is going to put their Chevy name and logo on the Aveo cars, they need to acknowledge that this is a manufacturer's defect and be held responsible. I brought it to my dealer this morning and they want $99 to take off the panel plus whatever the repair is.

I submitted this problem from the Chevy website. They called me back saying they're not aware of this problem and offered me no assistance. They said that my cars must have been tampered with!! If others are having this problem, please complain to Chevy and do not try and fix it yourself!!!

This happened to my daughter's car too. You are right GM should fix if for free since it's obviously a defect.

I have a 2009 Aveo that has the same problem; the lock on the diver's side has fallen into the door. I thought that someone tried to steal the car and tampered with the locked. The lock was half way visible and showed no signs of damage. Now I realize that it is just a defect design and the lock has into the door like so many others.

I wasn't TELLING you to do anything. I was only supplying some information. If you want to pay the dealer to fix it, by all means, go ahead.

Last month when I tried to unroll the drivers side window it made a horrible sound. Turns out the lock fell inside the door-just like all these other folks before my post. I hope that the Chevy dealer won't charge too much, my doors lock fine. I just can't use the drivers side window.
Sounds like a factory defect to me.

This just happened to my car today. I thought at first that someone had tried to break into it, but reading all of your posts makes me think otherwise now.
Is there anyway we can file a class-action lawsuit against Chevy?

This is just one more thing in a string of bad luck I've had lately.

A car place near my house wants 45-50 dollars to do this.
