GM continues to struggle with unrealistic forecasts for vehicle sales; their plan to increase production to 2.8MM vehicles for 2010,
up from <1.8MM in 2009, shows that they don't have a strong grasp of today's reality - prices are too high, people are worried about the economy, any discretionary purchase that can be postponed will be delayed until confidence in the economy/job returns; if GM carries through with their production plan, there will be a glut of unsold vehicles requiring significant discounting which will hurt all NA manufacturers at a time many are just eking through; need some stability/predictability in the market for the short term, at least, so the auto companies can start to gain traction; otherwise, look for a repeat performance in 2012/2013 for GM, and say goodbye to Chrysler |
