Parent Fiat has a variety of diesel engines, the problem being meeting the EPA's tier5 standards without a lot of emissions gear, that adds a lot of cost to the diesel engine options. Currently euro diesels are tier3 and 4, and require (a la MB) particulate traps, catalytic converters, and the addition of "Bluetec" urea exhaust reactant every 10,000 miles or so.

A better choice for Chrysler, would be to use diesels across the board in trucks, and small petrol engines (Fiat Twinair engine) in their small entry level cars, with a diesel option for the midsize/sporty autos.
