GM Dex-Cool Settlement

WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. has agreed to pay as much as $800 each to millions of customers to settle lawsuits that it sold about 35 million vehicles with faulty coolant and engine parts.
The move announced by lawyers Wednesday would close one of the largest product-liability lawsuits faced by a U.S. automaker. GM declined to say how much it expected the settlement to cost, but the agreement gives payments to customers even if they bought the vehicles used.
The suits stem from GM's use of Dex-Cool, a coolant it first introduced in its vehicles in 1995 and sold in more than 35 million cars and trucks between 1995 and 2004. About 14 federal and state lawsuits seeking class-action status have been filed against GM over a variety of problems in V6 engines linked to Dex-Cool.
Thousands of customers have complained of problems ranging from small coolant leaks to complete radiator and engine failure. Court documents show that GM has received tens of thousands of repair requests linked to Dex-Cool and engine gaskets in the affected engines, and considered recalls for some models.
Under the settlement approved by a California judge last week, people who paid for Dex-Cool-related repairs on 3.1-, 3.4-, 3.8- or 4.3-liter V6 engines within seven years or 150,000 miles are eligible for some payment from GM. Repairs made within the first five years are eligible for up to $400, while sixth-year repairs could receive $100 and seventh-year repairs $50.

This one is a bummer as I just got hit with a repair of the intake manifold that the orange Dex-Cool screwed up.

2000 century 3.8 L.$1500.00 intake man. replaced,therm. housing,hoses system flushed,charged for dex coolant......3 weeks later system had to be flushed again and of course charged for everthing again also made several calls to detroit, florida and calif. dept. consumer repairs (these "parasites" said"nothing could be done as there was no pending recalls,or legal action pending.)

Yeah well $1500.00 is nothing compared to the bath I'm about to take with my F150 5.4L puking spark plug #7 and ruining the cylinder head. I'm looking at $3000 to fix this pig.$3000 for this gas guzzler to run the same way it did before it coughed the plug.

Ford is garbage....I'm buying a Chevy for my next truck. At least with the cam-in-block designs the repairs will be less, though I don't expect to have to repair a Chevy. My truck has been recalled on 5 seperate occurences, and the last one was to replace the cruise control module that was replaced by an earlier recall!

sorry your ford blew up might as well be a G.M. i am re-registering my 67' sunbeam alpine (at least i know what everthing under the bonnet does and it can't be smogged!)

I replaced intake mantifold gaskets thermostat and water pump along with radiator hoses and car still runs hot

1999 Monte carlo ls 3.1v6 61,200 intake manifold gasket let go,2 months later the wather pump let go,terriable engine

Good luck with the GM repairs on the intake gasket.

I drive my 1972 monte carlo and it runs like a top, my 1998 silverado overheats in summer and with 103,000 miles on it the repairs are monthly. they don't make them like they used to.

Hi I'm looking for some help. my truck is currently in the GM shop for yet another problem with blown gaskets due to this coolant. I paid $1830.79 in Dec. 2006 was told coolant was leaking into my rear differential, because of blown gaskets. I had to have a rear differential overhaul.
Then again in Dec 2007, My vehicle was overheating. When I checked my radiator, I noticed a thick black sludge on my radiator cap. I was told I had a manifold gasket leak which ended up costing me $2085.
My engine light came on monday.Aug. 11th I checked my radiator and it had the same black sludge as before. I was near an auto parts store , close to my home, whom ran a computer diaognostic and said i had a blown head gasket but it was safe to drive to a repair shop as soon as possible. I took my truck and dropped it off at the dealership that night.
I am now told this was not the same gasket and will not be repaired with out an additional $1800.00. I am towing my truck home in peices. Please help me

Sorry to hear your troubles, but this kind of thing happens when your purchase a GM vehicle.

Good luck with the car and at least the service department is taking care of you. I'd tell you to trade it in on a Toyota but they won't even take that vehicle on a trade with the typical extensive repair history.

I replaced my intake mantifold gaskets and water pump along with my radiator and again just today another set of intake mantifold gaskets because of the Dex-cool Coolant in my 1999 Chevy Silverado.

When my 1999 PontGranPrix first started running hot(6mos. after purchase) it was told to me by the dealership that it was normal for my type of engine to run above 240 degrees, I was told that my car has a special high performance engine, what a crock... instead of admitting that there was a defective problem they kept giving me the run-a-round. And when the correct problem was finally diagnosed, it end up costing me $2180.00. Thanks to HURRICANE KATRINA my problems with the car is solved. HIP HIP HURRAH!!!

Next time you should try your luck with a Toyota, Nissan, or Honda. They have bulletproof engines.
