Sun Metro rolls out a new look on buses

Full story: El Paso Times

Austin, as you all know, is the home of the proud Gold and Brown Panthers. Yes, in the past few years we have had our fair share of problems with academics and graduation rates -- although in the past two years we have raised both higher than we have in a while.

Defending Austin HS and Mr. Tanner is commendable. Your circumstance does not allow you the privelage to observe how the TAKS manipulations occured. Unfortunately Mr. Tanner's job was to ensure that AHS passed TAKS exams at all costs. Whethere this directive hurt one student or numerous students it was wrong.

EPISD has some major issues to deal with now. Mismanagement of funds, illegal hiring practices and a failed TRE election.

You are one of the lucky students as you probably kept your grades up and participated in numerous activities to ensure your academic success.
Good luck in your future endeavors.

I agree with epsd taxpayer. Students would not know how Dr.Tanner and his adm. could manipulated the TAKS scores. Blame Dr.Tanner and Dr.Garcia!

This student is talking about his experience please don't crush what have happened to him. He had a great experience at Austin High School. He is right the drop out rate is high at this school. I am GED teacher and a lot of student come from Austin High School. Please teach at our school before you listen to what other people are saying. Get the facts and understand this was not for the 2009-2010 school year it was for the 2007-2008 school year data that are wonderful senator was looking at.

Thank for writing the article, young man, but I'm still siding with Senator Shapleigh on this one because I am old and not nearly as naive and idealistic as I was when I was your age. I've seen how easy it is to manipulate the numbers. A simple reclassification here, an exemption there can make the accountability magic happen. I usually don't agree with Shapleigh on much of anything but on this issue he is right on.

Do not compare yourself with Senator Shapleigh. He does his homework, before he opens his mouth. You, my dear, are still a student still learning, and will need to pay your dues - as you will learn. Good Luck!

This student is fool of sh*t, regardless of his age!!
The fact that he can write is enough of an accomplishment for this kid. Why didn't he say something during class as his classmates berated, cursed at, and abused his teachers and while the principle took a sh*t on his faculty!?

Oh, I know why... He lacks the character and integrity necessary to oppose corruption, like all the typical drones!

Well stated!! He needs to shut his trap and pray that the nation doesn't go broke in the next 5 years. If it does, it is not going to do anything for him in the unemployment line.

Sadly, the senator did not do his homework... at all. What he did do, however, was to put down two schools that have always been easy targets. Instead of saying what a great job Bowie and Austin did, he said they cheated. Shapleigh may not be racist, but he does follow that formula.
Look how he said that Coronado and El Paso High also cheated; but with those schools he did not hold a press conference. Could it be because Coronado is where he and his children attended and El Paso High is in the neighborhood where he resides? A little too convenient.
The saddest part is that Austin didn't cheat--neither the principal or the superintendent--but because the senator alleged this (without proof), there will always be that doubt. A senator should know better before he makes allegations without merit. Shame on him.
Good job, Enrique.

I wonder if Enrique was projected to fail? They have a program that does this and now they are saying that all students projected to fail took the test and none were exempted for anything.
Do people really believe this?

Dan, before you speak, please know what you are speaking about. For those of us who work in the schools, we can tell you are all smoke and mirrors. And shame on you for trying to disparage Enrique. He had the guts to write and now you question his intelligence and his passing of the test? A new low, even for you.

Why are people jumping on this young man for stating his opinion and his observation. Most young people are too self absorbed to even read the El Paso Times. Enrique takes the time to read and comment on his experience and he is attacked. The "adults" are way outta line. Kids like Enrique should be encouraged. Go to school and study journalism you make alot more sense than these "professionals" that write for the times and alot of these knuckleheads who make comments.

Good job, Enrique.
Bowie and Austin are not targets. Senator Shapleigh did his homework. EPISD has insurmountable problems. Again the students did not cheat, the adults did.

No one cheated. Shapleigh made an allegation without merit. Period. End of story. And if that is Shapleigh doing his homework, he gets an F. Swarmy politician. Nothing more.

Don't know how you got all that out of my question. What Enrique and you do not realize is that the cheating that occurred hurts other students. They are not getting the benefit of an opportunity for education.

I am sorry but using a student who has been fed information just for the purpose of the article is wrong in my opinion.

He says “I have never seen a faculty or staff more willing to help a student succeed than at Austin High School. EVER!”

I wonder just how many faculty and staff he has seen?

Later he says “They made posters” which to me says someone was trying to justify the spending of $360,000 on staff development to make posters.

I guess the 12 absent students could not be cuffed and taken back to the test.

He was fed information the adults wanted him to write about. No smoke and mirrors here!

And Senator Shapleigh did not say teachers were cheating, unless you helped pull the booklets during test time of certain students that had been labeled "projected to fail".

You still haven't answered to your unnecessary insult toward Enrique. You owe him an apology. And you state "cheating" as if it is a fact. It is not! Shapleigh made a claim and had TEA "evidence." However, his interpretation is completely in error. And you still don't know what you're talking about. But-- God bless you--you think you do.

You are now the expert? El Pasoans are not allowd to voice their opinions and observations if it doesn't agree with your point of view. Like it or not all of the complaints against EPISD, Trustees and Dr. Garcia are not without merit.

Are you using smoke and mirrors to confuse the public. Obviously the citizens of El Paso and the employees of EPISD have spoken...the TRE was voted down. Confidence has departed in EPISD's leadership and vision.

An investigation is the wisest scenario at this time.

Daily Horoscope for February 13

Sagittarius

It's time to muster all your resources and energies and push through to the next level. The harmony between Mars and Saturn will support your efforts. If you need to dig deeper into shared resources or your credit facilities, now's the time to do so. With careful planning and perhaps family support, you can consolidate and somehow find greater security. This is a calculation not a risk though.
