What a shame. Too bad we don't execute death row inmates that fast!

Poor Australian taxpayers. They must have money to spare. Why not just shoot them with rifles? Then at least you could serve kangaroo at the local soup kitchen. I heard it's pretty good.

Why don't they round up and sell them to zoos around the world? They could make money!

Its a sad story but I think this is Australia's problem not ours.

We need to start worrying about what happens in America.

Because we have millions of eastern grey Kangaroos and in good times that population can increase three fold in one year alone.

How many thousand you like for your local zoo?

Unfortunately we have driven the kangaroo’s natural predator (the dingo) to virtual extinction, on top of that we have also cleared over 75% of Australia’s trees and a kangaroo’s preferred habitat is open grassland.

No predator + ideal habitat = population explosion.

We have to slaughter millions of them just to keep their population at the ridiculously high levels they are currently at, we would have to slaughter millions more if we wanted to get them back to a pre-white settlement population.

Another natural predator that has been driven to a state of local extinction in many areas is the wedge tail eagle.

Unfortunately, the roos need culling. Relocating them would cost $3.5 million (according to the federal government).

There are more than 50 million kangaroos in Australia, they are not an endangered species. They can breed all year round, and gestation takes only a month. They can increase their population by up to 400% in five years (if food and water are sufficient).

Australia is also infested with millions of rabbits but there are no protests when we cull them.

You know how you have mountain lion culls in America because if you don't they'll be on your doorstep trying to eat you and to keep the wild cat population down?! Of course you don't. I live on two acres in Melbourne and sometimes count up to 40, that's 40, about 15 with joeys in their pouch, kangaroos on my property alone. Luckily, I live in an area where there is lots of food for them to eat. Unfortunately, in a lot of places, there isn't enough food for them to eat. They end up trying to cross roads and cost lives, and suffer horribly when hit, and when STARVING. You know the saying 'breed like rabbits'? Well,'roos do that too, granted their babies take longer to grow, but their population grows to such figures that the natural food isn't enough for them all, especially with the drying effects of drought and of course, with everyone needing to build their own new house in a brand new estate, their habitat is constantly being minimised.

Hi Cautious, I live near two beautiful wedge-tail eagles. One was mostly black, or very dark, and the other was a wicked tan colour top half, and dark bottom half. I love their "pant" legs. We were lucky enough to film them for a minute the other week and my husband posted them on liveleak. I'll ask him the address and post it later. We've lived here for nearly 14 years and see two regularly, which grows to three every year for a period of time. We can always tell when they're around because our resident magpies warn us every single time! Territorial birds, magpies.

I have 200-300 living next door, they are only culling a few. We are not going to do what happened to the buffalo, dont worry.
Roos are cool.
