12-year-old girl killed in crash caused by suspected drunk driver

well river it was just a mater of time you and your drugs and drug dealing boyfreinds it was so sad to se your child being the parent all the time and it is so sad to se that the child protective agent never steped in after many calls this is the true crime i remember all the times at fernwood when you poor child would be up at the bar while you would be selling or doing drugs on the back steps or how about all the time's you would be having sex in the same room how many times has this happened or how often where your drug buddies try to take advantage of your girl!!!!!!! thank god she is in peace now the life you gave her was hell !!!!!!!!!!

A CARMEL Middle School seventh grader died Saturday night when she was thrown from a car that overturned on Highway 1 just south of Piedras Blancas in San Luis Obispo County. A California Highway Patrol officer arrested 25-year-old Gorda resident Jason Halvorson for felony drunken driving and manslaughter in the death of Cessair Zadurski, who was 12.

CHP public information officer Scott Koolman, who works in the Templeton office, said Zadurski’s mother, River Marcum, might be charged with child endangerment. Reportedly Halvorson’s girlfriend, Marcum sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated at Twin Cities hospital in Templeton, where her daughter, who was not wearing a seat belt as she lay across the rear seat of the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, was also taken and pronounced dead.

According to Koolman, Halvorson was driving southbound on Highway 1 just south of the Piedras Blancas lighthouse at a “high rate of speed” when he lost control of the Pontiac. The car crossed the northbound lane, left the roadway, crashed through a fence and overturned, ejecting Zadurski. No one witnessed the accident, which occurred around 10:15 p.m. Jan. 20.

Officers took Halvorson to French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, where he underwent a medical exam for possible injuries and had blood drawn. Although toxicology results are pending, Koolman said,“All the signs and symptoms indicate he was under the influence.” He was lodged at San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of felony DUI and manslaughter, and the court set his bail at $200,000 Wednesday.

Depending on the results of the investigation, Halvorson could also be charged with gross negligence.

“We’re going to look at the car and investigate the scene a little bit more, and talk to friends and relatives and find out what all went on,” Koolman said. He estimated it would take another 10 days to complete the investigation.

Memorial set for Saturday

Madeline Franco, principal and kindergarten teacher at Captain Cooper School in Big Sur, said Cessair Zadurski attended the school for most of her elementary school career and caught the attention of all the teachers there. She enrolled as a sixth grader at Carmel Middle School in fall 2005.

“She was a wonderful, special little girl who was kind, well liked by all her peers and very intelligent,” Franco said. In the 2005 Cooper yearbook, Zadurski wrote she “wanted to grow up to be one of the world’s great mathematicians,” according to Franco.

“She was such a strong person of character,” she said, recalling the girl’s many talents.“She was so good with helping other people with conflicts and resolving things between people.”

Zadurski honed and used that skill as part of the school’s conflict manager program, in which kids learn from counselors how to help students mend fences following fights on the playground.

Her death also reminded the Cooper School students and teachers of another tragedy just six months ago, when Pedro Sagrero Rivera reportedly crashed his car on Clear Ridge Road and fled the scene, leaving his 8-year-old daughter, Jacqueline, dead.

“This is the second little girl in six months who has died in a car accident,” Franco said.“It’s been doubly hard on the community and the staff.” Many of the children at Cooper this week said hearing about Zadurski reminded them of losing their friend and classmate last summer.

Zadurski will be remembered during a memorial service set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Captain Cooper School in Big Sur.

“It’s my understanding we have people coming from this end of Big Sur, all the way south as far as Gorda, as well as people from the school district office and Carmel Middle School staff,” Franco said.“It just impacts so many people.”

Man that is so sad...i mean, she didnt get to fulfill her life you know?? why didnt she get a chance like a lot of other people in the world?? why would god let that happen?? i mean, doesnt he love us??

well, dave it was just a matter of time before you posted insensitive and judgmental comments addressed to a young woman who lost her daughter forever. if you or any other self-righteous, judgmental folks in big sur would ever have attempted to get to know, support, love, or care for, REALLY that is, River and Cessair, and YES I MEAN YOU KEN HARLAND, maybe this would not be our reality now. thanks so much to the judges in big sur for their compassion in realizing that river marcum has paid the ultimate price for her mistakes. it seems about time that she gets a little comfort in her time of dire need and emotional torture. imagine, dave, whatever the circumstances, that your twelve-year-old lies dead and nobody in your community comforted you.

Stop the gossip! No one really knows for sure what went on except those who were there and it's wrong to just make accusations! For crying out loud, a child died! Let's try to reflect on what Cessair did offer us and let it be a lesson for us to find something somewhere in our hearts. She obviously did.

I would just like to say a couple of things here, I am Jasons sister, I live in wisconsin, where jason is from. I am Jason's brother and I also live in Wisconsin. I have just a few things to say....first, to Dave, whoever you may be. I have no idea who you are but one thing I can say is that you are a cold hearted person with no soul. Did you even know my brother?! He is one of the most kind hearted people that I know and he loved Cessair like she was his own child. You know accidents happen Dave and people change. Jason hasn't been perfect his whole life but he did turn it around. From talking to both River and Jason they were very much in love and wanted to start a life together. I can't believe that you would be so close-minded as to go and point the finger when you don't even know the true story. If you really were a "friend" of River you would be there for her in her time of need not calling her a bad parent. I'm sure that you aren't perfect either Dave and neither am I nor do I claim to be. I don't know River that well but what I do know is that she is hurting very bad at the loss of her child. Do you think that she didn't love her daughter? I am just praying for River's family along with all the families that Cessair may have touched. I hope all of you are also praying for these families. We are very proud of our kids. They have shown the family values of unconditional love and care and concern that makes us proud to be a family no matter how many miles may seperate us. Every kid from young on to young adults will make mistakes. I know we have made mistakes in our past as I'm sure everyone who reads this will agree that they have too. It is human nature. It is a true family that loves each other that can work through the mistakes no matter how big they may be. We are very saddened by what happened. It benefits noone to blame and make assumptions when we don't know what happened, but to offer support for everyone connected to River, Cessair, and Jason is the best we can do. We have love and support for Jason and River, and have cried for Cessair. We pray for all of them and for both of our families every day. Once again we are proud of our family to carry on and exhibit the ability to show unconditional love.
We also pray for Dave and others that have closed minds like his that someday they will truly know what it is like to give and receive unconditional love.
