Sounds like the money might be better spent further developing the pepper picking machine. Although I'm not really against giving them a break..

Why is it that (put your favorite industry name here) is so quick to put its hand out for government bailout money when the markets turn bad?

And why do the same industry leaders scream like angry banshees whenever the same government boosts the minimum wage at levels that don't even keep up with inflation?

--------
"Cervantes said the tax incentive would help keep chile growers from switching to other profitable, mechanized crops such as alfalfa and corn."

So let them switch if it's more profitable. Can they say "free market enterprise"? As it is, the growers sound like a bunch of welfare grubbers.

Mechanize. Put American engineers and factory workers to work.
I don't want to pay for your "work force" from Mexico so they can then demand to stay here indefinitely and reap all the benefits meant for American citizens. Chile farmers want the cheap labor and the customers for their product all in one person, meanwhile the American taxpayer subsidizes the third world work force. No chile for me this season, maybe next.

Chile pickers don't even make minimum wage.

The growers want a hand out.

The Mexican labor costs are low but the

growers say too high.

The governor wants the growers to not

plant as much crop as they do and give

other states a chance.

So, who cares?

The illegals will have no work.

I say, good!

Sounds as if the Chile industry needs to conform to the needs of the market place or disappear. As much as I hate to see a local industry in crisis maybe hand outs and incentives will prolong the downward spiral that they are in. If this means border controls and policies are working, then they had better find the means to adjust to a new market place.
