Full story: KOB.com Eyewitness News 4 - New Mexico

I could see it if the bus has to go out of it's way for the stop, but if it's a stop in the middle of an existing route, why not stop?

Your lint licking democratic fiazapacrapa humor is lowlife and racist. You need to get a grip and act like a man instead of some insulting democratic fiazapacrapa that you really are.

Hey. Just think how much fuel and maintenance money they would save if they closed all of the bus stops and just cruised around without any stops and starts.

I agree that cutting bus stops will probably hurt old people the most. The rest of us probably need the exercise.

The Old Town/Country Club residential area is one of the densest populated and established parts of the city. Yet when it comes to Rapid Ride service, it is one of the least serviced areas.

When I asked a high-ranking transit official on Earth Day at UNM why there were so few rapid ride bus stops in this area I was told, "The residents of this area don't want them. They all have their own cars and they will fight the idea because they it brings unpleasant people."

Well, I guess the city thinks they know what its citizens want, but I beg to differ.

you can also call 311 since they are the official call center for any and all city services... not a part of transit but still a city service and a great way to double-stuff the city with complaints...

A number of stops could be eliminated at intersections where they exist just before and just after the cross streets. Doing so would speed up travel time. But I do have to wonder how many 'others' this clown would eliminate.

Oh please it was on the news at noon with Greg Payne's ugly mug trying so hard to look important.

Instead these clowns adding stops now they're removing them. With Greg Payne not having any experience as Transit Director goes to show what a mess he can make out of the Transit Dept... Not to mention all the law suits he's losing and costing the tax payers lots of money. But they sure keep quiet about that, don't they..So, if anyone has any complaints about the Transit Dept. or the Mayor.. I have first hand knowledge that Greg Payne reads the posts and also posts himself..

Um, I think this is a great idea. If you have ever driven down Montgomery or other streets like that, there are stops ever two freaking feet. I know as Americans we gotten lazy, but come on people walk the extra 4 steps to the other stop. Really, its not that hard.

This is actually an attempt to discourage ridership and it is a sop to those former snobbish Payne supporters who believe buses near their neighborhoods cheapen them. I guess Payne does not expect Marty to remain mayor, so Payne wants to run for something again. I believe that is what the transit director wishes to do, discourage ridership in the farther flung areas, and emphasize the RapidRide and the yet not begun tourist trolley from the airport and to heck with the average citizens all over town who might use the bus if they don't have to walk too far---the bulk of the people who help subsidize the buses and who help pay Greg Payne's salary. I have seen Payne in action as City Councilor regarding bus routes in District 8 and therefore I do not think Payne likes buses and I think he is prejudiced against people who ride them, except possibly the twice a day commuter lines and their patrons, many of whom work in the City-County building. As Councilor he was in favor of removing the buses from the users for the sake of the nonusers who thought they made their neighborhoods less "exclusive." This dumb idea should be stopped immediately. The Mayor should replace Payne for trying this dumb idea. It finally exposes Payne's elitist attitude about buses and the ridership. I really doubt it was Chavez' idea, I certainly hope not. But the Mayor was candid in stating that he appointed Payne in gratitude for having helped bring in the Republican votes from District 8, so maybe this is being done to please those nasty elitists, and get them to vote for Marty again. It just stinks. Bus stops are far apart already in most cases--- when one has to walk half a mile to get to one, or in some cases in the Heights, more than a mile. The way the transit department fakes numbers, there's no way to tell about ridership or costs, anyway. Marty: Keep all the stops! Add some more! Fire Greg Payne for this prejudiced, unfair idea!

Take it easy on Greg Payne, will ya? The bus system has, despite itself, improved light years since I first started taking it five years ago.

Maybe having too many bus stops does increase the amount of riff-raff who might end up in high-end, densely populated areas.

But how can you tell the riff-raff from respectable people who just want to save money and minimize their carbon footprint?

I like Corn Daddy's idea, tho: Having a stop before and after an intersection probably does increase transit time. A stop after the intersection would, most likely, cut down on transit time and allow the driver to "make" the light.

WOW talk about a command city leadership decision. Keeping the stops available seems to me good business sense more options for the riders the more likely it will be used thus keeping revenue for the city in a better position.Secondly these bus drivers know the route like the back of there hands allow them to make the critical decision of stopping when passengers are waiting to be picked and NOT stopping when passengers are NOT present..And also lets spend even more more by ripping out all those 2,000 plus bus stop signs I'm sure that will save alot of money sending crews out to do this..Another boondoggle idea , when can we get to important issue in this city..

I take it you're not a bus rider. Driver get paid by the hour not by the stops they make or people they pick up..What's the big deal just leave the stops that are already there!
