he is a cruel man.

He was elected to serve ALL of the citizens of his state, INCLUDING gays/lesbians - "whether he likes it or not."

Well, who in the heck does the governor plan on making funeral arrangements for gay people? His wife, perhaps?

Or does this stupid cretin of a governor think gay people live forever?

This is what happens when Roman Catholic Republican Bigots are elected to public office. They abuse government office to foist their religion upon people who aren't Roman Catholics.

The mormon mafia does the same thing.

A stupid and heartless man and senseless decision. You can tell this one was not thought through completely. What's next...take the surviving partner's right away to attend the deceased's funeral? What an ass. Go jump in the Rhode Island ocean Governor...PLEASE!

Did you notice in the article that the Governor said "If the General Assembly believes it would like to address the issue of domestic partnership, it should place the issue on the ballot and let the people of Rhode Island decide". This is yet another example of someone trying to put Civil Rights to the vote of the people. Would he say that about one of the issues near and dear to his heart? I think not!

This is the true nature of christians and roman catholics promoting hate of gay people in life or death. We will not know peace until we do everything in our power by any means to remove them from power! In our state we had equality and it was taken from us because of pure hate. Now we have to regroup and go on with our struggle for equality on a national scale.

I agree Spider, however the Mormons just allowed passae of GBLT rights in Salt Lake City. Who would have guessed!?!?!?!? Seems like all the Roman Catholic Republican Bigots may one day (but not soon enough) become the minority. God will judge them some day too.

Okay, all you fundies brainwashed cretins out there haunting our board... Can you logically explain THIS one? Does it say somewhere in the bible that "men shalt not plan each others funerals as they would a woman"?

What is the justification hare? It is just plain cruelty, in the name of cold-hearted bigotry, toward a person who just lost the love of their life.

God, he looks like the Crypt Keeper from "Tales from the Crypt", and I would actually PREFER the Crypt Keeper as governor. What year is this? 1965? This is more disturbing than the Maine vote fiasco. I am really seeing disruption of basic human rights a brewing. Once again separation of religion and state are being compromised. The founders, which these fundies LOVE so much would roll in their graves. This is just what they did NOT want this country to become.

Good question. I see a lot of negative judgements of comments so far, but no replies from people adding the "disagree" and sour lemons icons. Cowards.

One good thing came out of this.

Carcieri tops the list for immorality and absolute filth. He is actually deeply offensive and utterly immoral in having made this decision. I wonder when he wakes up what commandments he decides to break for that day.

The one good thing about this is that in commentaries on blog after blog, I'm seeing people say,

THIS IS WHY GAYS ARE FIGHTING FOR GAY MARRIAGE, NOT JUST CIVIL UNIONS.

Carcieri has helped them prove their case.

To me, in a *totally* fair world, he would be IMPEACHABLE and REMOVABLE FROM OFFICE for having done this alone. We do not live in that world, or people would not have to be using what he did to *REITERATE* the case that this is why pro-gay forces are fighting for gay marriage, not just civil unions.

I'd like to see someone kidnap this guy, off his kids and wife, and then hold him in custody so he can't attend their funerals. He bloody well deserves it and don't any of you f**king church gays write back to me about forgiveness.

The way this country is headed, the rise of monsters of incompetance like Palin and Limbaugh and Hannity and the whole sorry mess shows me the way the winds blow. Canada is looking better day by day. An entire country of Blue States.
I read in 2004 when Bush won the Canadian immigration offices were PACKED with USA citizens scrambling to move north.
If the right wing tea baggers and other riff raff drive Obama out of office in 2012, move over, Great White North. You may get a new resident.

Wrong - you'll find lots of rednecks in Calgary, which was largely populated by Americans. Fortunately the ultra-right ones, who even have a political party, are not very numerous. But Alberta tends to be pretty conservative.

As for the rest of the country, from what I've come to understand during my time here, is that the other prairie provinces outside indigenous populated regions plus lots of farm-country Ontario are also very conservative in nature. Toronto, Ottawa/Gatineau, the Maritimes, and so on are generally more liberal in voting patterns. The separatists have a special agenda so are hard to classify but they seem to be pro-gay.
