She had a lot of potential until she went total R&B and tried to be a gangsta. Now I can't listen to her. This type of non music is what has led to the demise of the recording industry. Hate it!

Elvis Presley was the best ever!!!!Not only was he a great singer, he was athe best performer that ever lived...And who in the music industry sings Gospel Music or even brings God into the lirics....I could go on and on about Elis Presley...His good out weighed his drug habit by far...I would do drugs to if I had the presser that man had in his life....

The numbers mean little, we do not hear Ludwig Van Beethoven fans (myself included) complaining about his only Nine Symphonies being compared to Mozart's 40, by Jupiter!

Elvis Presley dead more than 30 years is still the foremost name in popular music and the most used measure of success.

Mariah Carey is not exactly Maria Callas, but she has had her day :-)

Elvis can Never be King, he only emulates muscian such as Chucky Berry, Bo Diddley and Little Richard. " U aint nothing but a Hound Dog" was not even his song. He stole it from Willa Mae Thorntan in 1952. Lets be honest Rock and Pop did not start with Elvis and you can never be King of something you did not create.

Why the put-down of someone who has a beautiful voice, and who's songs have made much more than a tangible impact on people's lives? To each his own, but don't for a moment think that Mariah Carey can be compared with someone else and vice versa with Elvis Presley!

Even though I think Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, and Madonna the queen, I give Mariah the princess title. She just not an icon or break through artist to me yet.

Elvis never did like to be called King of Rock & Roll purely because he himself said in many interviews " there's only one king" & would point to heaven. It's music for goodness sake not life saving information. There's always been room for all genres of music not sure why there has to be a competition but if it's competition you want you really need to check out all of Elvis's gold records that as yet Madonna, Mariah or Michael Jackson are yet to equal.

I dispute your comments. Elvis was very upset when the Beatles arrived and feared dethronement. Elvis always wanted to be no1 and feared and resented anyone else being better. He had his spiritual side and he had other sides.

Watever, I grew up listening to her music...it doesn't matter how long it took her, either way she passed Elvis so all of that what you just said, it doesn't matter...besides both artist are in TWO DIFFERENT GENRES. So why does it matter??? Besides, the song "You Ain't Nothing But A Hound Dog" that's not his song - That was Big Momma Thornton's song...All i have to say, i know Mariah Carey will be #1 when she passes The Beatles...GO MIMI!!!

All of this is silly. It's not about how many albums sold , it's the impact that these artists have on their generation. If you compare Mariah Carey to Elvis or the Beatles then I give up. You would have to be so young and naive there would be no use in trying to explain it to you.

Elvis Presley was not a songwriter. Most of his early songs were his rendition of blues artists. He was the FIRST white artist that sounded black. He is the first of many to break the barrier by sounding soulful. His impact dwarfs anything ever done by MC or any artist in the last 50+ years with the exception of the Beatles.

There was Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and the Beatles. These giants of music impacted their entire, the ENTIRE generation and changed popular music forever, and I'm afraid that no one else comes close.

And to 919 Dude if you want competition go to a sporting event. Art is subjective and you're opinion is just like the location of where your head is..........
everyone's got one and they all stink.

See ya sonny!

In my opinion,as was stated above Elvis did not create a genre, or was he an innovator. His claim to fame was that he sounded and could mimic black soul and style. Even the Beatles admitted that they were influenced by the Black artists of that time. One of the most influential Artist of all times was James Brown. He was the architect of Modern Black music which was the foundation of Modern pop American culture.

Not sure where you get you're historical stories from but it was James Brown himself who said about Elvis ..The Godfather of soul himself,James Brown stated in an interview several years after Elvis' passing that "Before Elvis came along I could not even get my face on the cover of a record album,he went on to say that Elvis did more for Black artists then anyone in history. If we go back to 1954,we will find that the American music scene was pretty stale and very white.Hits such as "How much is that doggy in the window" and "Hot diggity, dog diggity" were the hits of the day. Then along comes a young man who after spending alot of time in Sun studio singing all the pop ballads he knew finds the courage to sing a song he knew and loved by a black blues artist."Thats Allright Mama" originally recorded by Arthur"Big boy"Crudop, was the song,Elvis took the song and added an uptempo rythym guitar,a little country, blues and gospel mixed, and music history was changed forever. We know that Elvis was not the first to record Rock & Roll,Bill Haley was around among others, but it was Elvis who took this once unheard mix of black and white rythyms and made it mainstream.Elvis grew up around the blues and loved it,he befriended alot of blues artists such as B.B. King, among others.Add this to him listening to "The Grand Ole Opry" and the sounds of gospel music from white and black churches he attended and it comes together. He was a walking musical time bomb waiting to explode and in 1956 he did....
Whether you love him or hate him you can't deny the facts,it took Elvis to create the BIG BANG of Rock & Roll, and everyone who followed him owes him a debt of gratitude,I think the words of John Lennon say it well,"If it was not for Elvis, there would not have been the Beatles, before Elvis, there was nothing"..I could not have said it better myself, and by the way, about that Parade Poll...last check,Elvis was comfortably leading 91% to 9%. So next time you decide you want to give anyone a history lesson on music it may help if you get your facts rights.

I am not trying to take any thing away from Elvis. It is a known fact that Elvis was watching and studying blacks in the South. This comes from eyewitness acounts...grandparents...who met and saw Elvis. They also knew Big Mama Thornton. I am sure Elvis had other influences besides black culture, but black culture played a major role too.
