To pull White English birds.
They try to pass themselves off as ethnically Jamaican, white English chicks are even more crazy about Jamaican men than they are for black American men- despite black American men being rare as fk, while pretty much every other black British man is Jamaican.

but seeing as the Jamaican accent is sooooo hard to imitate, African men just put on an American accent.

Apparently this is very common- according to Wanda.

What I want to know is, why have I never ever ever heard - or seen this being discussed on a british board before- despite being an african in London for going to 30 years?

Now were not talking about using jafaican or black American slang- which is common amongst practically all groups of young people------ BUT claiming to be ethnically black American or Jamaican.

I don't know if they did it to pull White English women, but I do know that a few African men back in the 90's used to do this. I doubt of that was the reason, because I remember a time when some Nigerian guys were trying to chat me up, and I asked them where they were from. One of them answered "Lago.... I mean, Kingston!" Some of my friends (black and white) said this happened to them as well. I think that was where the term Ja-fake-an came from. But sometimes 2nd and 3rd generation Jamaican try to fake the accent as well. It's actually hilarious to watch and hear, because most of them have never been further than Calais.

You sure?

For a person to be nearly done saying Lagos before changing it to Kingston is oddly comical. It's something I would expect on a show like Chucklevision and not real life.
To even think Lagos must mean they must be foreign born with their brain still in a foreign- I expect a thick accent to come with such mentality.

I'm sorry, but I find this really hard to believe. It's almost like telling me black people used to paint their skin with White paint and tried to convince people white people that they were White.

Far fetched as it may sound it actually happened. To be honest, those guys probably weren't even from Lagos, but most likely from a surrounding area, and you know how when people come to the UK from elsewhere, they will name whatever the nearest large city when asked where they are from. And Kingston was probably the only Jamaican city thy knew of, so they named that. From what I remember, their accents were extremely thick, which was what led me to question what part of Jamaica they were from, having said they were Jamaican before even specifying a city or region.
I wouldn't say this was a common occurrence, like Wanda is implying though.

He's doesn't seem to be putting on an american accent in this interview.

Accentuating with an American accent is very common when it comes to commercial music as Americans are generally the trendsetters and influence others

And British rappers did not always rap with British accents

You honestly can't hear his fake American accent? He is clearly not speaking in his natural accent which an African one but I still hear it a bit.

People do not talk like that in London or Africa.....

British rappers who get ratings do not rap in American accents, this guy is getting nowhere and that JaJa Soze character to who also raps in an American accent.

That's definitely not an american accent. It's not British either. Its a blend of accents and it's something you'll hear with people who moved around a lot especially during childhood.
Listen to the way he pronounces half of his vowels.
Compare it to this
http://www.youtube.com/watch... or any other American interview out there
He clearly puts more effort into rapping American than speaking American.
It's not like that accent would fool anyone into believing it's an American accent right?

British rappers today probably do not rap in american accents because it's pretty much about grime. That doesn't mean this guy knows how to rap any other way though. He's clearly not British by birth so:: rapping like an American is probably the only thing he knows. He probably even grew up listening to nothing but American rap, so it would be very normal for him to rap like that, right?

Im not bothered about rating as I dont listen to British rap or grime anyway. It's all crap. Or american rap much for that matter. Rap is crap.
